H.O vin# code
hey all,
i have a 2003 5.9 H.O 305/555. i know it is the H.O because of the 305 hp stamped on the engine ID plate and i have the 6-speed. my question is.... is it the vin#6 or vin#c every time i need to buy parts, i am asked what the vin code is and i dont have a clue. i am sure most replacement parts are the same for both the S.O and the H.O. but when it comes to performance upgrades i.e a edge juice w/attitude, i need to make sure i have the right numbers before i drop 800$ on the wrong part. thank for any help out there.

doge always uses the vin and its the first 6 numbers they do it on all their trucks no matter what year. as far as upgrades never had anybody ask for vin, just year of truck and motor
Cody,
This is from the 2003 service manual for VIN # interpretation of the 8th position:
POSITION INTERPRETATION CODE = DESCRIPTION
POSITION 8 Engine
K = 3.7L 6 cyl. MPI Gasoline
N = 4.7L 8 cyl. MPI Gasoline
D = 5.7L 8 cyl. SMPI Gasoline
6 = 5.9L 6 cyl. Turbo Diesel
C = 5.9L 6 cyl. Turbo Diesel High Output
W = 8.0L 10 cyl. MPI Gasoline
Z = 5.9L 8 cyl. SMPI Gasoline Light Duty
Hope this helps. Position 8 is either a "6" or a "C" for our trucks. The C in the 8th position indicates a H.O. engine.

Actually for most systems at Dodge it is the last 8 or in some cases 9 didgets of the vin.That brings up everything on your individual build.
