The output of the SO with the SMARTY is pretty much the same as the HO with the SMARTY running the same levels. So the power gained with the SO is actually greater than the HO.

So adding a SMARTY to the SO will equal the same output of the HO using the same SMARTY level.
Example, say your SO is 250hp. Set the SMARTY to level 5 (roughly 100hp measured on the HO). So now the net output is going to be about a 150hp gain since the SO had a 50hp loss with the stock programming.

Stock the SO ran cooler than the HO. That's why the HO has piston coolers.
The EGTs should be pretty close to the same using the SMARTY on both engines. And boost.

It's not the pistons, it's the gallery cooling. Nozzles are situated to spray oil on the bottom of the pistons for added piston cooling. The HO engines make more heat than SO engines because they put out more power in stock form. So they have gallery cooled pistons to help deal with that additional piston heat. The SO engines can put out the same horsepower with tuning, but the pistons will be running hotter. There aren't very many melted pistons happening, but cooler is better and there is a limit somewhere. For high horsepower, gallery cooling is important. Cummins thinks it's important with only 305 Horsepower. So if you tune an SO to put out more than that, and you tow heavy or race it, you might have a problem.
