Got some work to do
ok guys I posted about some tapping noises.Well I have went through the valves for the 3rd time. It is not in the upper end so I got the stethascope back out and started it up with the valve cover off and started listening to each rocker and injector. No tapping noise on top. So I went to the oil pan no tapping noise there either but the noise was still there. I started listening to the side of the block and the noise can be heard on the block but not on the oil pan or upper end. So I am thinking so type cam & lifter issue or maybe a piston skirt? This does not sound of act like a rod or a main. There is no blow by or no making fuel. I am stump.. has anyone had cam issuse or lifter problems? Also have a slight miss and the noise is the loudest back by the doors?
Thanks,
Scott

Seriouslly doubt there is a cam/lifter issue. These engines are known for knocks. Much of it results from engine bending sounds. In other words, when a cylinder fires it actually bends the block slightly. Enough to make a knock. If a injector pop pressure is slightly less than the rest. Now that cylinder is firing in a advanced condition. Knock results. Has someone qualified indicated that a problem exist. Don't get paranoid about a reasonablly normal noise.

What type oil filter do you use? Some oil filters will break up and plug the "J" jet cooling nozzle for the pistons. When this happens the piston will fail from excessive heat and lack of lubrication.
Case Number K94943066
Vehicle Issue The Engine Has A Knock. Crankshaft And Rod bearings Were Replaced And The Engine Still Knocks.;The engine oil level is correct and oil pressure is good. The engine was disassembled, rod and main crank shaft bearings were replaced. The engine still has a knock in it.
System or Component Knock;Customer Concern (No DTCs);Crankshaft and Bearings Lower Section,Connecting Rod and Bearing Lower Section;Recent Repairs;Yes - Continuously
Recommendation Inspect the cylinders and pistons for damage. Inspect the piston cooling nozzles for blockage and damage.
If the knock can be isolated to a specific cylinder, move the injector to a different cylinder and see if the knock moves. If the knock moves repair or replace the injector as necessary. If the knock does not move verify compression and valve adjustment.

ok I contacted a friend who knows a friend and he is bringing the "DRB" I think is what it is, to do an injector kill check. That will atleast tell me if it is an injector. Still trying to figure it out. I put in a quart of Power service in, a quart of 2 cycle oil, and a quart of tranny fluid in yesterday and ran it pretty hard yesterday. It did seem to quiet it down some but it is still there. keep in mine I am pretty mechanically incline and have always done my work on all of my vehicles. This is not a faint lite tap this a loud over engine noise and with the window up tap... very close to a lifter noise when low on oil or a hydraulic lifter not pumping up...

Not sure if I have the same problem, and sorry if this is a hi-jack...
I have a rattle that isn't right either. No one can put their finger on it, but it just isn't right. I had it in at Fisher Diesel in Lethbridge, and they are stumped as well. The truck runs awesome, doesn't burn oil, no smoke, 20 mpg (imperial gallons) average (50/50 town / hwy), has good power, all stock with all Fleetgaurd filters.
We ran the stethescope all over the engine, and the noise is definitely loudest / sharpest around the oil filter / cooler. Did injector cutout and it is definitely not an injector. Did cylinder balance test, #1 - #5 at 100% + and #6 was at 95%. I haven't checked this theory out, but I am suspecting that maybe the spring in the relief on the oil cooler is broken, and rattling around.
Again, not sure if this could be your problem, but thought I'd throw it out there.

Yeah!!!!!!..

Ok. I figured it out....I had instructions from a Print out from a supposedly Cummins Manual. As described I used the blank spot in the tone ring as top dead center.. As it turns out there is a small groove on the balancer with T.D.C. stamped on it . Had to get wire brush to find it. Once I located and mark it, It was about 30 degrees from the blankspot of the tone ring. Anyway I re- adjusted the exhaust valves and TaDah sounds just like a sewing machine. No more tap tap tap. Thank you all for all of you help and Ideas, I hope this helps someone in the future that may have this problem.
