Got a P1740 code today????

I was coming home with my small trailer with the cruise on about 62mph when my engine light came on. Got home and checked the code it was P1740. From what I have read it has something to do with the TC. Everything seems completely normal no slipping, shifts are the same as they have been since new. It now has 34k on it. I have done a filter and fluid change at 19k. And yes my truck is stock. Never had a programmer on it. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks in advance....

This is the first time it's happened. Other than the code has your tranny been ok?

I hope you have warranty............

My old truck's (2001 Dodge Ram 2500) check engine initially light came on with no fault codes. I unhooked the battery and cleared the fault code.

One week later the check engine light came back on with a stored fault code of P1740.

The service manager called back and said he just got off the phone with a 'service adviser specialist' and they are going to take the transmission out and install a new input shaft, front pump, and a new torque converter. They are had to install a new trans filter and do a complete tranny fluid flush.

Dealer's parts and labor was $1700.00. I just had to fork out $100.00

They removed the tranny from the truck and replaced the following:
-Valve Body Pressure Boost Cover Plate (warped)
-Valve Body
-Input Shaft Front Pump/Pump a$$embly
-Torque Convertor
-Bumch of new gaskets/seals
-New ATF (system flush)
-Trans Filter

GOOD LUCK!

Yep I have 34k so I only had 2k left on my warranty.
It is going in to the dealer today. He said the same thing about all that has to be replaced. I do not beat on my truck at all, I do pull a toyhauler but it is only 10.5k loaded out so not too heavy for the truck, and I dont have a programmer. Does anybody know what is causing this to happen? BTW it seems to shift and drive the same as it always has.

My old truck ('01) had 33,000 miles on it when this code popped up.

Mine also shifted pretty decent and drove fine also.

What is causing it? A junk trans from the factory, that is not built like it should be..........

So would my trans be okey if I just kept driving it and ignore the code or would it eventually have taken a dump on me sometime down the road? Most of the threads that I did find on this problem seem to have been related to an aftermarket TC that had been installed. Not too many on a stock trans. Since the wife wont have any confidence in the truck now I guess I'm one step closer to my built trans.

They just called and said it needed a "transmission sump pump". Hopefully they locate one tomorrow.

No luck, they have to special order the "front pump" 1-2 weeks. I have the truck back and it still drives fine. They said it's okey to drive but they wouldn't suggest towing. It still baffles me that something is wrong when the tranny doesn't feel any different than it has since it was brand new???? No slipping or anything, just that dang P1740 code. I guess my problem doesn't happen too often since there hasn't been very many responses to this thread.

I got 4 TC, 2 VB's, 2 input shafts, 2 pumps, 2 OD soenoids, 2 gov. something or other, tranny full of metal shavings & a bunch of other little parts due to that code. 3 TC's & all the other parts were w/out any power adders. Whatever parts they replace come w/a new 3yr./36K mi. warranty. I doubt replacing the pump will fix it.

He did say there would be a slew of other parts they are replacing. The pump is what is on special order. So I'm assuming they have all the other parts on hand.

They misinformed you some on the warranty part though. If the parts are replaced under the original factory warranty, the parts only have the Remaining factory warranty left. For example.....if you had the battery replaced at 35,999 miles and one day left on the factory warranty, 1 mile or one day is all the warranty you would recieve with that part. Now....if YOU pay for the part or it is part of a service contract, that is a different scenario. This is unless Chrysler has changed thier warranty procedures, but I highly doubt it.

Still haven't taken back to dealer. So I had Autozone clear my 1740 code and so far it hasn't come back? What should I do, tell dealer to hold on to parts and keep driving or just take it in and have them replace things that might not need replacing?

Take the free rebuild. It's a no-brainer. Why did you clear the code at Autozone, when the dealer is involved?

That code could be a symptom of other problems or the source of the problem. Either way, if they are going to rebuild under warranty get it done and let them replace everything. Better than coming out of your own pocket.
