get some mpg back

i am getting about 16 mpg and about 350 miles per tank with a moderate lead foot. i know a handful of people getting 400 to 500 miles per tank.

i run diesel power service diesel kleen every so few tanks
oil change every 5k
fuel filter every 10k
air filter is good shape
bed cover
tires rotated and checked every oil change
no tuner

yes i know i didn't buy this truck for mpg but with some searching and checking out other trucks at a few meets they are getting more mpg then i am, hell one guy is getting over 600 miles per tank.

I get between 19.5 and 20.4, but I'm really light on the pedal, shifting at 1500-1700 rpm and not letting the boost get above 10psi. On the highway I set the cruise between 1800 and 1900 rpm, which equals about 62mph. If I slow down to 1700 rpm, I get slightly higher on the flats, but lose a bit more on the long hills so it actually works out better to drive slightly faster. If I lived someplace without any big hills, it would probably be a different story.

When I drove 68-70mph and took off briskly from every stop, I averaged around 17mpg. For me, being lighter on the pedal is roughly 3mpg, which comes out to about $16 a tank, or $64 a month...

Im getting lots of miles with a full tank. Could be anywhere from 540 to 660 or possible more. I be never drove to empty the tank, of course that would be a mistake, but if I would I'd probably get even more miles. Most of my driving is on highway on cruise and about 5-10 miles over the speed limit. I've got the best mileage going under the speed limit and in the last 30k miles for the factory tires 265/70/17 which I'm be changed 6k miles ago at 72k. I also have a Smarty senior and I don't pull anything. Two days ago I've filled 32 gallons after I drove 598 miles at an average of 80 mph on highway.

Lose the lift kit and offroad tires. Install LRR tires.

I love my tires tho... In the mud so worth it mine are 33s not any 'larger'.

I figure my next buy will be a tuner, I was thinking the tuner is the key... Or re-gearing to 456s.

I get between 16 to 17mpg in the city and about 20 to 25 on the hwy. (that around 65 to 70mph) From stop light I try to stay around 1,500rpm's to 2,000rpm's to keep my mileage up. I have to do the speed limit cause me having a CDL. You don't want a speeding ticket w/ this type of license!

I'm no expert but don't gear lower. You want Rpm to match at whatever your cruising speed is to be between 1400 and 1900 rpms Depends if you run mostly empty loaded or pull a lot of hills. Stay in the engines max torque range at a lower speed that pushes less wind. Example: my truck as listed in my sig 3.73 gears. 65mph @ 1650 Rpms gets me 21 mpg easy. With my smarty. If I want to make time I pay 1800 to 1900 Rpms @ 70 to 75mph gets 18 to 19mpg. I commute 5o miles each day in stop and go city traffic. I average 16.5 if I can drive nice. Again with smarty. I have tried lots of miles running stock just to see if economy is better, I lose 1.5 mpg each time. I would look into a tuner. My vote goes to a smarty.

I don't gear lower. I have an automatic and don't lead foot it from the stop light (or did I not read you reply right?). I can't afford a Smarty cause my used (new to me) is only a month or to old and the wife wants to spend money on a new fence because ours is a 15yrs old contractors fence and is rotting! Maybe sometime in the far future.
