Gearing help...

I have read the post below about going from 4.10's to 3.73's but my problem is the exact opposite. I've got a 6 inch Superlift and 37 inch Toyo's with factory 3.73's and I have problems when towing.

Ca. cops live to give tickets for speeding "while in tow" and the fine is pretty stinkin healthy. With OD off I can tow at 55-60 but the truck feels like it's turning WAY TOO MANY R's (2100) and if I try and tow at 55-60 in OD the truck hunts too much for the proper gear. If I tow at 65 in OD, all is well...except my driving record!

If I went to 4.10's I should be able to tow at a slower speed while still in OD, right? Going back down to a 35 inch tire might be a solution too.

What about the cost? Anyone know what it costs to go to 4.10's? (It is a 4x4).

Thanks for the help.

Chad

Hi Chad, 4.10s would be perfect for towing with tires. I have a set of 4.10s because i went to a 3.73 on my daully. Should cost you about 1300.oo to 1500.00 with gears.

In my opinion, 2100 RPM is NOT high at all. With the stock 265/70/17 tires and 3.73 gearing I was running close to 2100 RPM at 70MPH EMPTY !! To me 2500+ RPM is getting in the too high, but I feel comfortable running any under that. If you go to 4.10 from 3.73 your RPM's are only going to get HIGHER not lower. To decrease your RPM on the HIGHWAY you need to go to taller gears (Numerically lower). However, in your case, this would take away alot of your low end torque and you will feel it with those 37" tires.

In my opinion, with 37" tires, 3.73 gears are too tall. You need a minimum of 4.10 or even better 4.56 . You are putting alot of stress on the power train with that combination. Of course this is just my opinion.

BUZZB8Z, how does your truck perform when empty. I am thinking of going to the exact setup you have and have gotten many mixed reviews as to how it will perform when empty. Would you suggest 3.73s and 37s for empty driving?

My 35"s and 3:73 are fine when driving around empty, but you can tell a difference from stock.
However,
This combo is just wrong for towing. My rpm is either too high, or too low, and on mountain passes when I need the power to get around someone, I quickly run out of gear, causing a shift into a lower rpm range.

As for 37"s,
I switched from 35"s to 37"s on my last truck which also had 3:73. There was a slight decrease in power while running empty, and a huge decrease with a load hooked to it, in fact my tranny went at 65k and it was because of the tires and wrong gearing.

I will never run a tire over 35" again, and I will be changing my 3:73 to a 4:10 as soon as I get some disposable money.

1. Because we bought 4x4 and want our trucks to look like 4x4
2. More ground clearance. The back differential is huge and takes away from ground clearance.
3. Because we can

The stock ones are useless in anything that resembles offroad. They are 32" tires (actually 31" and some change).

5. Because I would get stuck in my own yard with stock
6. Because you should inless use of fifth wheel

As for changing from 3.73 to 4.10 to me is waste of money and time.
a .30 gear change aint that much I run 7.17 in my swamp buggy and thats a big difference from 4.56
My truck has plenty of power to turn 36's and mpg is great with 3.73
If your looking for pullen gears go with 4.56 but keep extra fuel on hand
