gear ratio change
gear ratio change
hey guys I found a 04 truck just like I want but it has 410 gears in it what is involved in changing them to 373 it is 04 auto if I buy the truck I would level it and put on bigger wheels and tires so I dont know how much I would gain there but this thing at 80 was doin almost 2500 rpm but it sure would scoot for a stock truck so what would you guys recamend
I dont think it is worth it, especially with it being an auto, my 05 with 3.73 and factory tires is turnin 2500 at 80, if you are going to put 315s or 35s on it I'd leave it alone, Never priced a set of gears and install kits for a dodge but I would guess it would be somewere in the neighborhood of $600. So I think the bottom line is youre going to have a truck with less "grunt", how much fuel could you buy with that $600 and how long would you have to drive it to make your money back, and would it be worth looseing that snappy low end it has now to maybe MAYBE save a couple bucks. This is only my oppinion though I am interested to see what everyone else has to say.
If you like the truck - buy it. I wouldn't sweat about the gear ratio. Any perceived improvement in fuel mileage from a taller gear set will never pay off the cost to do the gear change.
Another piece of good news is that the auto tranny's have a taller OD ratio over the NV5600 that is in your favor.

The 4.10 axle ratio is the best to have if larger wheels & tires are in your immediate future.....be glad it has the 4.10, as alot of dealers seem to hardly ever have any 4.10 equipped trucks on their lots.

I just had a gear swap priced from 3 different dealers. The original dealer who sold me the truck and obviously wanted some of the money back I conned him out of on the deal and 2 other uninvolved dealers. The original dealer wanted $2800 PER AXLE to swap gears t0 4:10! Other 2 were pretty close at around $2600 for the pair of axles. I had a local tranny shop price me and he quoted about $1800-$2000 depending on cost of gear sets. Here is the crappy part. Even if the dealer installs the gears you void the original warranty because it was not originally installed. Only warranty you get is a 1 year from the installing dealer. I'll just leave the 3.73's in and let them replace transmissions at their cost.
On a side note, this is a great forum with lots of good info. Thanks!

what size tires can I put on with a leveling kit and 10 in rims I like to do at least 70 mph at 2000 rpm so what tire size would I need also can the dealer change the speedo for the bigger tires
My 315s with the 3.73 gears and the automatic are in that range. If you don't tow heavy they'd be great. They just put my RPMs a little low for towing and I have to run it in drive more often than I'd like.
I was serious about swapping. I won't spend the $ to do a gear change, but swapping the axles wouldn't be bad.
