So last week my old water pump failed on the way home from work. Had a Gates order before the tow truck even got to me. I'll keep this short. The pump arrived Saturday and for the life of me I couldn't get both bolts started. It fit but it was like the bolt hole were off from each other or something. Well I wasted more time than I should have with it. I knew from the start that the weep hole area was different on the new one, but that difference was why it didn't fit. The pump was hitting the front engine cover lip and that was holding it up just enough to throw off the bolt holes. I would have ground the edge off the pump but when I put a small screwdriver in the weep hole it was too deep and i'd hit it grinding.
Went to local Napa because I didn't want Duralast and they had the same pump, since gates is their supplier. The counter guy was really cool and looked the part up then checked, but they didn't have another. So he called and found another Napa and had them check theirs. It was correct, so I beat feet to that store. Long story short the new pump fell into place and the job was as quick as I'd hoped it be.
I contacted Gates about this and they are aware of the issue. They advised they knew "some had gone out with too much metal in one area" and were "currently rounding up those pumps". Attached are some pics the one on the right is the 'too much metal' one. If you get one like this, dont' even waste time. Send it back or contact gates to send to them.
Thanks for the info! I have put 2 Gates New pumps on mine. They fit perfect but seem to not last very long. first one was less than a year. It's been about 6 months on this one so crossing my fingers it goes for a while.

Oh man i didn't want to hear the gates don't last. I mean its not a hard job but still dont want to get a ton of practice at it. Is there a more recommended brand might buy one to have on standby
