Question G 56

I have to make a decision on a used 05 dually Monday morning. It's a 4x4, quad cab, with as far as I know the 3.73 gear, only 19,000 kms. and Laramie trim. The G 56 transmission has me worried...high rpms. and fuel consumption.

What's the latest consensus on this transmission? I had my mind made up on the NV transmission or the 48RE automatic. I'll be using the truck to pull about a 10,000 lb. Fifth Wheel and am concerned about highway mileage.

Any input would really help.

Thanks.....

If you are pulling that much, buy the truck. The gearing is perfect for towing. If you want to run empty and fast, Then you might be concerned. Some people seem to be just fine while others complain.

I agree, it depends on how fast you want to tow your 5ver.

70mpg you'll be fine
80mph and you'll be spinning 2500rpms.

You can always put some bigger tires on it.

G56 with 3.73's is like an nv5600 with 4.10's

I wouldn't let it stop you from purchasing.

I'll be the lone dissenter here, 10k is not heavy enough to warrant the manual or the dually. The dually 4x4 is just not going to get good mileage, period. With the weight your are looking at a SRW will do just fine and if you want to drive it without the trailer the auto will make you better mpg at typical road speeds. Unless it is a killer deal or mpg is not a big deal keep looking.

My G56 in my regular cab 4X4 dually does great for me. I keep it at about 65 on the interstate and I never pull anything with it. I just got back from Chicago in it and at 65MPH it got a shade over 22MPG. I love the combo.

I have an 05 quad cab with G56 and if I keep it below 70 mph than I can get 19 mpg out of her. I pull a trailer 7500# trailer 85% of the time for work and I get about 15 mpg avg all the time. I do wish it had a 7th gear though. Kevin

the g56 pulls great much faster shifts than ANY NV ever made! i have owned just about all of them however if you start putting lots of mods(over 80hp) the clutch will slip like you never dreamed! lol

the gears are low no doubt empty i wish i had one more gear but my SRW feels like it would pull a house down!.... my ol' psd had auto 3.73 and when i got 35s on her it was too tall for much heavy pulling...so g56 w/ 35s might be a good pulling combo and not to low for empty driving...i am not changing my tires until the factory tires wear out so i cant say forsure...my truck gets 18ish mpg empty have seen 20 before .....w/ 10k i get about 11ish @ 70mph

My buddy has a 05 dually auto 3.73s.He pulls about 8k and said 3.73s were a MISTAKE.Says on inclines he eaither HAS to keep it at 70 plus(which he does NOT like towing that fast) or it lugs and scream on downshift. Also on winding two lane backroads same deal.Says mine with 4.10s puls MUCH better at the 60 to 68 mph range and easier to drive because of this. Not towing his feels GREAT.I run 65/68 mph UP the hill and DOWN the hill with only a downshift on the worst inclines .

If worst comes to worst and you can't stand looking at a tach needle sticking straight up if you drive faster than 70mph you could get a Gearvendors over/under drive.
