Fuel Transfer Pump OUT on Time
Fuel Transfer Pump OUT on Time
Well, going down the highway in the middle of nowhere engine sputters a few times, smooths out and is running good. Another 400 yards and engine quits stone dead. Code P628 and no bump on checking. Transfer pump is toast, right on time at 30,400 miles. There was no prior warning to this. I will say when the engine quits the tank is very hard to steer when in a curve at highway speed.
1st dealer called as per Road Assistance program tells me it will be 7 days before they can even look at my truck. NOT.
Next dealer as approved by Road Assistance says they will look at it today when I get it in and order parts. 3 hour wait for towing to nearest dealer. Dealer service checks and they want me to know the transfer pump is shot and will be installed in the tank.
This happens Friday 0900 hours and I should have my truck back on Tuesday after I drive 200 miles to pick it up.
Thank you.

Pretty common on these trucks with the filter mounted pump. To much of a strain to pull the fuel from the tank. I didn't want the dealer installed in-tank set-up so went with a Walbro set-up. If you have an HP mods in the future you might want to go ahead and upgrade for reliabilty purposes.
Out of curiosity do you have a fuel pressure gauge? You mentioned it didn't give you any warning...I'm just curious if that also reflected on a fuel pressure gauge or not? I have been meaning to by a Walbro setup to prevent the inevitable from happening but also don't want to have warranty issues if the dealer tries to foo foo the pump in the event of an injector or CP3 failure.
I have a FP gauge and there was NO sign prior to my LP going out, it just went and when it went it was totally gone. I was dead in the water right where it happened.
I tell people all the time, just because you have a FP gauge doesn't mean you can see it coming. I still have my FP gauge and it hardly ever reads a consistant pressure. It's always lower in the mornings for some reason. I thought it was generally because it's cooler, but this summer has proved that theory wrong.
FYI- My first LP lasted 30K miles. They switched me to the in-tank setup under warranty. I'm at 43K now and I'm getting the Airdog but I need to convert back to the old setup first. My Cummins tech has already set aside the old parts to retrofit it back..

I had just changed the fuel filter a couple hundred miles prior to the FTP failing. The flow was good (3 bumps to fill canister) and started without a miss.
After the FTP failure, took lid off fuel filter canister and it was completely full. I have had a couple of flashes done since new and I wonder if the program was changed so that on detection of FTP failure the ECM shutsdown the engine now to protect the CP3.
Just for your info, I have always changed the fuel filter every oil change so there was no restriction ever in the filter.
