fuel pump?

My buddy's dad has a 99' ram cummins and his fuel pump went bad. He said it costed $2500 to replace it, 800 of it was labor thorough cummins. Is that the going price or did he get ripped off, just seems alot to me. I have an 04 ram diesel dont know if its cheaper for my truck or what. also would like to know the price of part and difficulty level of installation. Thanks for any info.

are you sure its a fuel pump and not an injection pump.cause i just replaced my fuel pump(lift pump) and it cost me 600 (Canadian) for just the pump, i put it in my self so labour was free.he must be talking about the injection pump

A friend of mine just had his replaced on an 01 and they told him if it was not under warranty that it would have been $2800 I think that is high , I have seen somewhere you could buy one for $1100. I think my 04.5 is beginning to seep, I will be talking too our ase cummins mechanic when he comes back about a rebuild kit. I have a feeling that when you take it too dodge you are getting the last guys pump that was rebuilt. I know they wont warranty mine because of mods, there is not much to the pump , it cant be much more than a gasket or seal. I am sue someone else might have some more info.

A couple years back the labor to checkout and r&r a vp44 pump was 4.0 hours.Called a Cummin dealer and the part was in the $1000range.Dealer wanted $1100(had to be released from Star also) and the Cummin store was WAY on the other side of Atlanta.Wasn't worth the drive to save $100 bucks.Reason I know had a friend who's truck died on hwy 441 and towed into Commerce dealer. He thought HE was getting ripped and wanted me to look into it.He was paying a fair price. He had a lift pump replaced a month before in New York and was towed in there.Truck had 198k on the odometer.
