Fuel Mileage Again
Fuel Mileage Again
Guys, I know I've seen some posts on this before but I wanted to get some opinions before I take this new truck in for next sevice. I picked up my 03 RAM 3500 Dually, HO 48RE, 4X4 with 4.10LS about 6 weeks ago. My wife and I just got back from a 2 week vacation to the east coast pulling our fiver. Trailer weighs about 9000-10000 lbs and I drove mainly in the 60-65mph range. The truck handled the trailer really well but the computer says my fuel mileage over the 4000 mile trip was only 12 mpg. That's horrible when compared to my 01 2500 HO 6sp with 4.10LS which got around 15-16mpg with the same trailer. How are you guys finding mileage when pulling about this weight????
Re:Fuel Mileage Again
Same here I get about 15.5 mpg on mine driving at around 65 mph or so, has 10,000 miles on it right now suppose to get better with age and miles is what I am told. You didn,t say how many miles your beast has on it! They are nice rides though aren't they? I see them ford (i can say that can't I) boys stare at my truck as we pass guess there envious or wishing they bought themselves a true Beast.

Sittenbull

Re:Fuel Mileage Again
I've never put much faith in claims of increased MPG or power after accumulating 10,000 or so on a new vehicle - never had experienced it on previous vehicles - but I have to admit that with a bit over 12,000 miles on my '02, the power is up noticeably, and the fuel mileage REALLY took a big jump on my trip up to Payette Idaho last week with the truck alone - can't wait to hook up to the fiver again and see what improvements have occured while towing - always got about 16 MPG in mixed valley/mountain driving at 15,000 GCVW before... I got better than 21 MPG on the Idaho trip, driving 75+ MPH... ;D ;D ;D
Re:Fuel Mileage Again
Thanks guys. I know the issues with the 4X4 vs 4X2, Auto vs 6Speed ..I had a 99 2500 47RE SO with 4X4 & 3.55 rear end and it still got around 15mpg with the trailer on. The 01 2500 HO 6 speed 4X2 with 4.10s bettered that by about 1 mpg. Not sure I understand the 3500 vs 2500 issue though. Does the extra set of tires make that much different??? I thought the difference was a little too much from my 01..it's about 30% lower.

By the way my truck has about 7000 miles on it now. I've had it less than 6 weeks. I really do like this truck over the 2500s I've had for pulling the trailer. Like I said before there was nothing wrong with the 2500s but the 3500 is noticeably better.

Sittenbull2 ...that 15.5 you are getting...is that with a trailer or by itself??

I've had 2 other Rams with Cummins before. The 99 2500 and the 01 2500. Neither took any jump in mileage with added miles.

It's pretty hard to compare one truck against another with so many variables, and come up with a fair appraisal of what it's doing for you.

On the other hand, get a few more miles on it - you might gain some of that "lost" MPG back once things loosen up... ;D ;D
My computer consistently shows me to get 16.4 MPG for my everyday driving, but my last two tanks have shown 18.0 and 18.2 MPG by manual calculations (double checked with calculator so I know I'm right). I don't really have much faith in the computers estimate any more. :

But...like others have said....you're comparing apples and oranges between your old and new truck.

Re:Fuel Mileage Again
i am not at all satisfied with my mileage at all...i dont drive my truck 60 or 65 ...if i did, yea i would get16.5 or 17 at best...my 97 would get an easy 19 at 80 mph..and the load didnt matter much..the truck is nice but the milage is killing me

Both 2500's? both auto or manual tranny? Both had same differential gear ratio - if EVERYTHING is the same, I can understand your concern - but if we're again comparing apples/oranges, all bets are off...
Re:Fuel Mileage Again
My trip computer is also pessimistic. Last tank showed 18.2 MPG, actual miles travelled was 502 & it took 23.8 gallons to fill to the top. That computes to 21.09 MPG. (Takes some time to fill it all the way, those last 2.5 gallons take forever.
) I wonder if the computer can be corrected. Anyone know?

Re:Fuel Mileage Again
My 2003 1ton srw, auto 48re ho got 13.8 pulling our fifth wheel at 65-70 mph, weighs about 11,000. I thought that was great. I only got 10-11 pulling a 30' bumper pull that weighed 7,000.
Re:Fuel Mileage Again
I know, I know,

no one will believe it. My truck stock gets 18 city. No trips yet so, I cannot comment on hwy milage. ho 6 speed 4x4 srw 2500. If I baby it, I can get 19+. Overhead is .7 less than actual everytime. Been checking for 11,000 miles.

Re:Fuel Mileage Again
JKE - have you been keeping track of your mileage right along? Have you noticed any dramatic MPG improvement in the last 5000 miles or so? Mine seems to have suddenly jumped up a couple of MPG in the last 3000 miles - I now have 13,000 miles on mine... Power seems up as well...
Re:Fuel Mileage Again
Negative. It did come up around 8 - 9,000 by about 1 - 2. That might be pushing it a little though. I just drive it. Do not try to get good and do not run it real hard either. That new muff has me running higher rpms now though (avoiding the "braaaapppppp" import noise) and it has dropped some...showing around 16 which is going to = 16.7 - 17.00. Like I said, the overhead has been nearly .7 low EVERY time. Packing the fuel in or not....and it does take a while to pack it in...I usually do not wait.
