Fuel filter removel

I haven't look too close, but is the a hex in the middle of the filter lid, or do you just turn the lid by hand to remove the 3rd gen fuel filter. Thanks!

fuel filter

Well here is what I do.Drain bowl completely, take off the cap with a crescent wrench(it should'nt be that tight)pop the filter out of the cap, replace the o ring, pop in the new filter, fill the bowl halfway with Sea Foam, then screw it down.I do it every 10,000 miles.

Every fill up I drain a few ounces of fuel from the filter, will this help get rid of any sediment if any?

On mine anyway, I wind up with about 1/4" of fuel still in the bottom of the canister, and the crud stays there.

Have any of you ever heard of filling up the new fuel filter with automatic transmission fluid? I was told it cleans the injectors.

I have had several diesels and always fill my fuel filter with tran fluid when changing. Years ago I was at a big diesel shop and asked them what they put in fuel to clean injectors and that is what this particular shop did. Makes sense to me and I have never had any problems. But I am just a shadetree.

Auto trans does not clean as well as whats DESIGNED to go in there.Years ago there were not many cleaners/solvents on the maket as today.ATF also has some propertys that could damage/score a electronic injector with very small orfices etc. If i was going to pour someting RED in there use Marvel Mystery oil or stay to whats DESIGNED to be used.

A friend of mine has a 98 Cummins and ATF is common practice for him. Doesn't sound like such a great idea on these 3rd gen. I do appreciate the info.
