I'd say most diesel owners could replace the filter w/o any issues. It can really be done in less then 5 minutes. Unscrew the canister, remove & replace filter w/o-ring and start that motor.

10K...had same problems on 1st filter at 12K. It was BLACK! I just changed it for the 2nd time at 10K (on the filter), pretty dirty (medium gray); looks like 10K is about right for the fuel my area. Really, it depends on the fuel in your area; sounds like some have to change before 10K to maintain peak performance.

What socket size is used to remove the fuel filter lid? Is a plastic lined socket needed to prevent marring the plastic?

Thanks!

I previously was on a 10k to 12k mile interval on fuel filter changes until my last fuel filter change two weeks ago.....I had no driveability problems, but the filter was NASTY ! I decided at my last oil change that I was going to run 5w40 Rotella Synthetic, and I'll be changing the oil & filter and fuel filter around every 6k miles or so. I previously always used the oil filter from Dodge, but now I've recently started purchasing my Fleetguard oil filter (LF16035 / $10.00 ea) and Fleetguard fuel filter (FS19579 / $10.25 ea) from a Freightliner dealer near where I work.

Anybody know how many microns the fleetguard stratpore filters out to?

I use a 1 1/8 socket 1/2" drive on mine.

Mark 10 microns per geno's garage catalogue.

I have a 22mm socket that works but is a little loose. Be careful not to reef on it too firmly!

I'm not sure which socket to buy now.

19 mm
or
22 mm
or
1-1/8" = 28.6 mm

Are there different sizes on the 3rd gens?

use a 1 1/8th in 6 point socket, dont use the 12 point and that little square in the middle is not for your driver. They have had lots of caps crack because people are using there socket drive instead of the actual socket. Also torque should be around 25 lb ft. At least it used to be.
