fuel filter fears

I hear so many people saying they are afraid to use a 10 micron filter on 3rd generation trucks and will only use a 6 micron . does anyone know how big a micron actually is? perhaps this will clarify.

How Big is a Micron?

There are 25,400 microns in one inch.
This dot (.) is approximately 1/64 of an inch wide and equals 615 microns.

Common Items and their respective particle sizes

Postage Stamp, 1 inch high
25,400 microns

Eye of a Needle 1,230 microns

Human Hair 40 to 300 microns

Oil Smoke 0.03 to 1 micron

Tobacco Smoke 0.01 to 1 microns

Beach Sand 100 to 2000 microns

Pollens 10 to 1000 microns

Typical Atmospheric Dust 0.001 to 30 microns

Mold Spores 10 to 30 microns

I'm still going to use the premium fleetguard filter which is 7 microns!

Just changed mine again today and still using the 7 micron Fleetguard. Mostly because of the TSB reguarding the recommended change from DC.

I am still running the 10 micron filter until I run out. I think I have 1 left, besides the one being used in my truck now. Then I will buy the 7 at that point. No problems with 10 micron so far.

All that this explanation explains is that things such as pollens and mold spores (even though I don't know how THEY would get in your fuel) and ESPECIALLY dirty debris that can be in diesel fuel (such as atmospheric dust build up) and more than likely a few other things can pass through a 10 micron filter, but would be filtered BETTER by a 7 micron...see what I'm sayin?

So what you need to add to the nice list of microns stuff is what are the clearance tolerances downstream of the filter? How big of a particle does it take to make an injector stick open or clog up? Obviously this debris is getting by the filter so the better you can filter the fuel, the better it is for your injection system.

Bought a fleetguard 5 micron a couple of weeks ago. I thought it was 5, maybe it is the 7 which ever one just came out from fleetguard for the 5.9. Anyways I plan on changing it this weekend (truck isn't driven during the week).

Last thing you need is to be denied on an injector (or CP3) claim because you chose to save 3 bucks on a filter.

What is a "Big G Mileage Miser" ???

No fears here, I just like high quality products myself. Such as Red Wing boots or Carhartt clothing. You can buy the cheap stuff for your truck if ya want, but Im buying the best for mine..... Have you ever thought about what typical atmospheric dust can do at 20000 psi ? .....just my 2 cents Rooster

If you guys don't want your 10-micron filters I'd be happy to take them off your hands. I'll even pay you for them.
