Fuel Delivery Issues
Fuel Delivery Issues
A couple of months ago my truck just shut off like it was out of fuel. I towed it (with another Dodge) to the closest "Five Star Dealer" and it was determined that the Lift Pump needed to be replaced. I was told that it was not a warranty item and it cost me $700.00. The day after I got the truck back I needed to fuel up as I was now on my way home, halfway between VA and IN. As soon as I started fueling it became very apparent to me that the "Tech" didn't reconnect the filler neck. I have diesel everywhere. I crawl under the truck to hook it back up and finish fueling. This is when I realize that the fuel gauge is not working. I drove the truck the rest of the way home and took it straight to my local "Five Star Dealer". They were unsuccessful in their efforts to get the fuel gauge to work. I have to stay on the road for work so I couldn't let the truck sit at a dealership while they figure it out. Two weeks ago I am on my way home from MO and the truck starts to act up again. This time it doesn't shut off completely but it will only make about 30 mph. Very dangerous on I-70. I manage to limp it into Terre Haute, IN and leave it at the local "Five Star Dealer" there. They discover that the Lift Pump that I had installed in VA was put in wrong and without a fairly important gasket. The pump was clocked wrong in the hole which caused the side of the tank to interfere with the float on the sender. It was suggested that this improper install caused damage to the Injector Pump which then got rebuilt. I was told that my truck was fixed and that I should be able to get my money back from the VA dealer because that repair should have been covered by warranty. I picked up my truck and broke down on the way home. Apparantly, the last dealer to work on the truck never even thought to replace the fuel filter. I replaced it and everything seems fine. Right before I changed the filter I used my Triple Dog to read the codes. PO148 came up. I cleared the code, replaced the filter, and have not seen a code since.
The truck is out of warranty now with 102K on it and I believe that Dodge will never work on my truck again. I need to find a good mechanic with a touch of common sense to work on my truck in the future.
I guess that the moral of this story is, if your Cummins won't make power, change the fuel filter before subjecting your ride to the nightmare of the computer diagnosis and trouble shooting at the dealer.
Anyone know a good Cummins mechanic in the Indianapolis, IN area?
