fuel contamination

I brought my truck to dc a couple of times to be repaired on a P0088 code. The first time I brought it in it was a sensor, but it ran perfect for about a day or so then took it back in. Today, I just got a call from dc saying there is alot of water in my fuel that is causing the problem(seperater light never came on). They told me I need find out where i purchase the gas from and call my insurance to make a claim.

I was just wondering if anybody else had this problem before. They said they might have to replace the hole fuel system and the last guy this happen to ended up spending up to 8K . I just hope this is not a common thing,

I don't really have any help for you but I would say to ask for proof of the excessive amount of water in the fuel due to the light NOT turning on. If the light came on I would say they might be right. But to me, no light means you better prove I have bad fuel!!

Take a sample of fuel YOURSELF. Then send it in to a reputable testing agency. A local diesel shop should know one. Then see for yourself. Chances are they're full of it. I'm sure if you come in and take the fuel sample they might have second thoughts.

I just called the dealer and they said the light does not necessarily come on all the time when large amounts of water is detected (BS). Because of the amounts of water that was in the fuel they want to replace the burnt up injectors, pumps etc...... = more money for them. and they also said the damage was caused from previous fillups??????

Thanks for your replies and I will do a follow up as soon as I get my truck back in a couple of weeks or how ever long it will take.

I would take the others advice....get the fuel sample asap before they dump all the evidence....also talk to them (DC) about the tsb the they releaced reguarding the new "recomended" fuel filters. Your truck (and every other 3rd gen) came from the factory with grossly inadaquit fuel filtering system and this switch to the "7 micron" fuel filter is proof (IMO). Also your tuck has two water in fuel codes, one comes up when water is detected and clears automatically when the water is drained. The second one comes on after you drive for a while (500mi??) with the WIF light on, this code will stay on your ECM to alert DC of possible fuel system damage. IF these codes are not on your ECM it is DC's systems that have failed causing the damage.
If DC will not do the work under warrenty have somebody else do it, or do it yourself, cheaper and much quiker... or better yet find another dealer.
We wish you the best of luck!!!!

I seriously dont know what to do but I did get a visual sample of the fuel and it did show water on the bottom of the bottle in the diesel gas but whos to say it was from my truck. Looks like im gonna pay 500 deductable for INS instead of:list

MODULE FU 359.00
FILTER PKG 38.00
ACTUATOR 145.00
FUEL PUMP 1166.67
INJECTORS 3018.00
MANIFOLD 669.00
CONNECTOR 55.00

total 5700.00

total parts and labor 7550.00

This was the price from another diesel owner that had the same problem and they want to repair/replace the same for me to eliminate any future problems that may accure. thanks for all of your advise

I would be looking to find a second opinion or an unbiased mechanic (one that doesn't work for the dealer). I think they're trying to pull one over on you. This sounds like lawsuit land. I hope you come out on top!

A friend of mine works for cummins told me to get the fail/fall? codes. He like u guys also doesnt agree with the dealers bs so I will post more of my journey. I just wish I had more knowledge on these diesels to make this experience A little easier.

One more thing is the first time I brought my truck in they said the P0088 codes was due to a sensor and they replaced an actuator and the second time I brought it in they said It was bad fuel, now wouldnt that be something that should have been found the first time.thanks

My father just purchased a brand new vette about 6 mo ago. At some point he filled up at a small "mom n pop" gas station with super unleaded. Within 5 mi of the station the car almost stopped running. He barely got it to the dealership. They pulled out two water bottles of fuel for him to see...about two thirds gas and one third water. He took the water bottles to the station with the intention of getting the owner to pay for the repairs. They laughed in his face. Insurance ended up paying for the costly repair, but the insurance company was interested in taking the station to small claims court.

Moral of the story is always try to fill up at major/reputable stations. Stay away from the smaller stations that 1. Cant afford to clean their tanks, 2. sell enough gas/diesel to dilute the amount of water that is being pumped into your tank.

I always fill up at truck stops. There's about 4 or 5 truck stops here and I fill up at the Flying J because it's the buisiest. I'm probably the most impatient person you'll ever see, but I deal with it because I know the fuel is good. I doubt a reputable fuel chain would laugh in your face if you got bad diesel from them. Could be wrong.

I'd check the top of the fuel tank to see if the VENTS that were suppose to have tubes and one way valves on them are wide open like many of these trucks. For 06 its called a roll over valve recall. All the rest of the year models are SOL unless you add hoses your self.Do a search.Lots of reading.

I had the same thing happen to me but worse. I got water in the fuel and a local station and the light never came on. One of my Injectors ran lean and over fuel the number #3 cylinder and cause a knock which was the piston slaping the cylinder wall. Needless to say it cost the insurance company $12000. They had to end up putting a short block back in.

UPDATE: well my trucks been in the dealer for about a week in a half. My insurance company wants to just flush the system out to save THEM money and The dealer wants to replace all that Ive mentioned (money for them). Now the dealer told me by having the system flushed it will void my drivetrain warrenty(HUH)with only 50k on the truck. I will stop the work before it starts because I never knew INS can void warrenties.

This is the BIGGEST crock of BS I have absolutely ever heard...course been hearing it for awhile now.

What exactly does flushing the fuel system on a diesel do. I need someone to please elaberate. I happen to be a Industrial engine field service tech and have seen COUNTLESS engines run on CRAPPY fuel and still run ALONG time.

I know these engines fuel system have very tight tolerences, but my point here is if the damage is done from lot-o-watery fuel then te damage is done.

A flush will do absolutely nothing---its like replacing your muffler bearings--go figure. Talk crap to the dealership and act like you own the place to the point of submitting the manager on the floor by KO. That how I got a totally new transmission out of diamler when my former 03 cummins broke the bell housing for no reason. They wanted to void my warranty for it until I got in the service writers face and told him how I wanted it fixed.

Thats a thin sheet of ice to walk on with a dealership but Im usually willing to take that chance.

Good Luck
