Front hub bearing removal

Front hub bearing removal

I have a few novice questions from my u-joint install yesterday.

1. Can the bearing internals be damaged by heating the bolt flange areas with a torch, my bolts did not want to come out w/o heat?

2. Can you over tighten a tierod end given it's a tapered fit?

3. Is it a bad idea to apply anti-seize to the 4 hub bolts (the ones that wouldn't come out) and the new u-joint caps?

One last one, anyone know the torque spec on the axle nut and if it's bad to torque more than spec for castle nut/pin alignment?

Answer:

1. Possible.
2. Yes, if the tie rod is old and worn the Tie rod may spin in it socket. As for clamping force. I am not sure.
3. It ok to use Never Seize. In fact, most of us recommend it.

antiseize everything on these trucks!!!!!!!

did you remove the sensor before you heated the bearing? if i were you i would remove the sensor and get a needle greaser and jam grease in the hub because you probably burned some of it out. also i dont think there is anything nylon in the bearings that you may have wrecked the only thing i could have seen you wrecking was the sensor and maybe warping the bearing somehow but i doubt that . grease the hubs and make sure everything is tight and then double check i for got to tighten a caliper bolt!!!!!1 not good! but didnt really jag anything up other than my newly powdercoated wheels at the time ive gotten over that though!

Good info guys, I was hoping there is no nylon in the bearing I had to get it pretty hot. I did put anti-seize on everything and maybe thought I shouldn't have on the hub bolts. I might crawl up under there in a few thousand and put some torque on them to be safe.

As for my tie rod end, the ball was spinning when I seated by hand then I hit it with my impact thus was worried I over did it.

From my 2005 service manual: 132 ft lbs Beginning Torque, Then Rotate 5 to 10 Times With a Final Torque of 263 ft lbs.
