Front Differential Vent Tube

Front Differential Vent Tube
Front pinion seal was leaking so before I changed it I wanted to make sure the tube wasn't clogged, when I was looking for the tube all I found was a red plastic cap on the fitting. I've owned it since new and I didn't put in on so it either came from the factory that way or the undercoating place I take it to did it. Just want to make sure this is not how it should be and now how do I fix it?
Just get some hose and run it from the fitting?
Where should I route it?
Does it need to have a special valve on the end?
Where can I buy one?

I lengthened my vent tube to get it higher and put a small breather filter on it, that way it's not getting dirt into the axle like the factory cap/breather allows.

Bought some tubing from the parts store and ran it into the engine compartment. I really think when they put the axle on at the factory they never took the cap off and ran the vent tube.
