front axle noise

I have a problem in the front end of my 05 2500. It started about 2 weeks ago with a slight 2 or 3 second grind every couple of days. There was no consistency to the noise, any speed, hot or cold, etc. Then one day it got progressively worse, constant and louder. By the time I got home the noise was unbearable, and got louder if I turned to the left. I parked it until this morning, and then jacked up both sides, and isolated the noise to the passenger side. Pulled the wheel, caliper and pads and still had the noise.(There went the easy fix) There sounds like there is metal between the dust shield and rotor, but was unable to get the caliper bracket off(will try again in a.m.), but I also notice a lot of free play where the axle shaft comes out of the housing. Does anyone have any ideas, or even a link to a schematic for this problem. The truck is stock height with 285/70-17's
Thanks for any help and hope all had a good Thanksgiving

most likely a wheel bearing.. the front axle will have play to some extent coming out of the axle shaft... have you seen if there was any play in the u-joint as well?

Prolly an axle U-joint. Have replaced three on mine so far. Could be a wheel bearing but my shop here told me they are not known to go out nearly as often as the U-joints. I thought I had a bad wheel bearing when i took it in but turned out to be just a joint.
