front axle noise

I have been getting a clicking noise from the front axle mostly when I turn, and when I took it to get checked the guy at the garage only found bad upper and lower ball joints-the wheels moved 1/4-3/8". Would bad ball joints make this noise or is it the U-joints as I would suppect that would make the lovely noise?
Are these tough to change (a fork and a hammer?)? And where would I get the most reasonable replacement parts?
Andy

i think that may be the noise. it was on mine at least. i just replaced all ball joints (greasable), converted the steering linkage to the inverted T steering, psc steering box, and a dss. i did everything myself except the ball joints. they are difficult. it is nt a fork and hammer job. more like a torch, press, torch press, cuss, pound, cuss some more job. i live in az with no salt, no rust and the shop had to pound off the rotors press out each stud and i didnt catch the rest of what he said. i just know he did not like my truck. its just my opinion but i would get some estamates. mine was like $550 without new rotors. $800 with them and alighnment

Are you sure its the front end? Mine did the same and i completely rebuilt it(u-joints/ball joints/hubs/seals/rotors/calipers/pads etc...)cause it was getting bad! Once done, i took it for a drive with a 100% improvement only to find out that the clicking when turning was still there! I got out and let a buddy slowly turn it in a circle and it turns out it was the rear end that was binding!! Pulled the rear diff cover off thinking the rear end was hooped and everything looked good so i cleaned it/changed fluids/added friction modifier and its now nice and quiet!
Anyhow, good luck.
Cheers
