Flashes....When needed?

I read threads on here and see where several people talk about getting a new flash for their truck.

How do you know if you need a new flash or when you need one? How much does the dealer charge for this?

It may be a dumb question, but thanks in advance for your input

The only time I it would need a ECM flash is if your having problems and a new flash would fix the problem like poor mpg or some CEL comes on for no reason. I know they have several flashes out the 2006's but until something goes wrong and its needed I will not have mine flashed. Why try to fix whats not broken.
