First tank results
First tank results
With the first tank of fuel through my new H.O., I came out of it with 17.8mpg as an average. My computer do-hicky was telling me that I was getting 18.3...but the dealer put the first tank of fuel in so I am not too sure if I got a full tank (maybe a little shy, maybe he topped it off)?

Still, I am very happy so far with the new rig. This weekend I will be towing 4500lb's for 360 miles one way...that should help with the engine break-in!
Re:First tank results
Hey Angleiron..you're doing ok with that mileage. I have about 3000 mi on my new HO 48re dually 4:10ls. I'm getting about 16.5 which I think is reasonable considering the extra weight and rear end. This is way off the 2001 2500 HO 6sp 4.10ls I traded on it. Used to get around 20mpg with it.

I pull a 5th wheel trailer weighing around 9000-10000 loaded. I was amazed at the difference in the way the whole rig felt pulling with the new 3500 vs my old 2500. Much better stability and a lot less bouncing over the rough stuff. The 2500 wasn't bad ....the 3500 is better.

The boss (wife) and I are heading to Nova Scotia with the trailer this Friday for 2 weeks. Trip will be about 4500mi....now that should break this new truck of mine in!!!

Let us know how your trip went with the trailer.
Re:First tank results
Of the four tanks I've gone through, I've found the computer to be right on the money for average mileage on the last three tanks. The first one the dealer filled up....and I'm sure he didn't top it off so my manual calculations came out lower than what the puter showed (kind of like yours has).

By the way...with the truck below and mostly suburban type driving I've been getting between 17.7 and 18.3 MPG...running empty. Less than I hoped for but much better than the 11 MPG I got with the Ford gasser I traded in...

Re:First tank results
I got about 17 MPG on my first tank also. Mainly cruise control @ 55-60 MPH and never over 72 MPH on the freeway. I've been told anything over 2000 RPM and you're sucking the fuel down a lot faster. I've got 3:73 gears, those 4:10's don't help when you're over 70 MPH.

My truck is a 3500 4x4 dually with the HO/48re and 4.10s. If I keep it under 60mph it'll get 17 or a little better. If I mash it on down to about 75-80 mph on the interstate it falls off to 13-14mpg. I sold my granpa a 2500 HO/48re with 3.73's and hes averaging 19.5 interstate at 70mph and under. The 4.10s hurt my milage, but man does it pull good.
