First Oil Change
First Oil Change
I'm rolling up on 3K on my new Dually. On my last 03 Dually I did'nt change the oil until 7K since I did'nt do much towing with it. I have'nt really towed anything with my new one yet and with that said is it a good idea to go ahead and change the oil at 3K to get all the break-in gunk out? I know on gas motors I always changed the oil after 500 miles and then 3500 there after.

I'm taking dodge up on there 7K oil change intervals to save money on having to do the oil every 3K like most vechicles. If I don't tow within the 7K then I will extend out to the 15K mark as noted in the manual. Of course the chances of that happening are pretty slim.

I know some guys are pretty religous with there oil changes but the way I see it is that oil today is produced with better detergents and seems to keep pretty clean, heck mine is night even black yet. Any insight on this subject?
Re:First Oil Change
ton4fun...I ALWAYS change my first at 500 or less then at 3000 there after...dont really care what the book says cheap insurance if you ask me....as far as the oil quality goes...your statement that oil is better than used to be is true....but...it suspends dirt better...which means that it is holding the dirt and moving it all over the engine...thus my 3000 interval...I persoanly think 40 or so $$ for an oil change is much better than 7k for a premature ejection of an engine...besides...my truck likes it when I change its oil...it told me so!!!! ;D
my two cents
Cameron
Re:First Oil Change
u should do a search on this we were scrapping about it a while ago.
.. my suggestion is an oil test and adjust your intervals from there. 3000k of 60mph highway vs 3000k of city stop and go in freezing temp is very different for the oil. I always run my oil long and never have lost an engine, lots and lots of miles.

Re:First Oil Change
This is one of the more volatile topics of discussion here. You'll see almost as many different opinions as you see members here. Other good hot topics are what kind of oil & filter.

I think Cummins has manufactured about a zillion ISB's with a very robust reliability database. If they had reason to believe that the oil needed to be changed at any particular interval, they would put it in writing to cover their butts WRT warranty work. They did. It says in the Dodge RAM Owners Manual.

Having said that, you can change it as often as you like, or can afford - in both time and money. Its whatever makes you feel good. Some Diesel owners like the oil analysis, some change it on miles travelled, some on engine hours, and some like to change it on how much fuel has been consumed. The manual says miles.

I did mine at 3500 miles because thats when my dealer said to bring it in for a complimentary oil change. I did the next one 4500 miles later. I would have changed it at 3500 even it wasn't free.

The aroma of fresh Rotella gives me that "warm and fuzzy" that the ISB is running on clean oil.
