Filter removal and install question
Filter removal and install question
This filter is the up graded Fleetguard for a 2006 5.9 engine. It is the first time I've EVER done any work period on a diesel so everything is new to me. I may have more questions as the year goes on.
Are the fuel filers hard to remove from the cylinder and hard again to put back in. By hard I mean I had a slight tug of war with the filter going out and then going back in I had to forcefully push the filter in place.
Do you wipe the inside of the cylinder clean with paper towels before putting the new filter in?
I also opened the drain once again before placing the new filter in and drained an additional few ounces of fuel out. I figured that I would get rid of more junk if I did that.
BTW my filter out going filter was blackish color! Is that normal?

Thanks Shorts. I used a piece of irrigation pipe to get my fuel in the bottle. It still did not address the tug of war or the hard push I did to get it out and re-install it. I guess it is normal, as nothing is leaking and it started up just fine.
Mine takes a firm push to install like that too. I guess it is normal. The housing drains pretty well. I found a length of clear plastic hose to extend the factory drain hose works good also. The inside of the housing is the dirty side of the filter so I would not wipe it down. BUT if you do have a lot of black residue then a good wipe down might be in order.
I change mine every other oil change and get no residue. Has yours been on there for a while? Another thing if something other than road fuel is being run in it, such as heating oil, then a lot of crap can build up quick. Stick with road fuel and don't fill up if you see a tanker rig dumping at the gas station. It stirrs up a lot of stuff in the service station holding tanks. JMO

Yes, they require a tug-o-war coming out and going back in.. Its probably just the seal sliding on the standpipe.
A little dark grey or blackish color on the filter is completely normal.
I stick the drain hose in a 20 oz. plastic bottle so that I can see what comes out of the filter base and also leave the drain open until I get the new filter in place and the lid tight.
