Faulty injector? how do I know which one is bad?
My 2003 Cummins doesn't want to start, I'm leaning toward a faulty injector but how can I tell for sure? How do I know which one could be bad?
Well I have searched and did so before I posted...I suppose I should have reworded....I don't have a miller 9011 thingy, I called around and it seems that I cant just buy it at the corner store, I was wondering if there was an alternative way to find the bad injector, you know without the specialty tools, I searched and found nothing, course I'm a better mechanic than an internet/forum user, but I'm no mechanic either!
Here is everything you need to know (almost)

I called around to different diesel shops and the local Chrysler dealer, none are willing to lend or rent the tools, I can purchase them through a few sources but will take up to 4 weeks for delivery. They offered to look at the truck for me but with the cost of towing and the shop rate for the tests, I'm going to spend the money to purchase the tools, I need a truck and can't afford the time to wait either!

I just had the same problem 2 months ago... wouldn't start -- Bad Injector.
In talking with a mechanic a few weeks ago, I told him the story, he immediately jumped in and said, "let me guess, #4 right ?"
He said it has been the most common one to go out... I changed all 6 of mine at 200k, then the last one at 390k. I have a few spares for future use.
.I suppose you could guess, at least its not hard to change em out... just costly.

I should bite the bullet and just change em all
I guess with 275K on it they are due. I just want to be sure I'm spending the money in the right place, if I change them and it still won't start due to some other thing like a pressure sensor, regulator, CP3 or Engine compression!
I just like to know what the problem is and fix what's broke rather than parts swap throwing good money after bad maybe even on a terminal engine who knows. I have no diesel smell in the oil, the oil level is smack on, no puffs of white smoke so I'm not certain it is an injector problem yet. If the injectors were cheep I'd do it anyway but at $400 each that's a lot of dough for a maybe.

well invest in a rail pressure gauge for one thing it will tell you a lot.bad injectors do not always dump fuel in the oil all 3 times mine went there was never any diesel in my fuel. white smoke is for dripping injectors not ones that are bypassing fuel
If you are that advanced in mileage, I would bite the bullet and send them to Don M and get them fixed. You can get mileage injectors, or you can get them upgraded a little, and increase power without increasing EGT's.

Thanks for the tip! I never thought of the injectors bypasssing, I didnt even know there was a return on these till I watched the videos that MrMoparMan posted here. If that's the case the test procedure will definitely point me to it. I just spoke to a snap-on dealer a few minutes ago, he can get me the fuel cap similar to the miller 9011 adapter (Snap-on part No. CJ148). He says he has them in Calgary and will take just a few days to get 'em. He cant get me the test fittings but I bet I could buy new banjo bolts at the dealer and make my own by drilling and tapping them for the right fittings. I know it's a pain but I should have a complete test kit before the end of next week, far sooner than ordering the tools from Miller.
madhat
The mileage that accumulated on the truck was from the previous owner (had his own mobile buisiness), I'll probably put no more than 15K a year on it. I want to use it pull my 5th wheel camper 4 or 5 times a year and haul my car on a trailer here and there for shows, other than that probably drive it to and from work once in a while and other usual pick-up duties.
I might take the snow plow off my 97 Ram 5.9 Gas gulper yard truck and use it for that duty as well, then I can get rid of that old truck.
I dont plan on doing any mods to the '03 (but the more I read on here the more I think of it so that could change).
What type of injector or rebuild would you recommend for this type of duty? Same as stated above?
