I think dodge onwners manuals are hypocritical!!! LOLOL It took me about 20 minutes under the truck to get the origional oil filter off from the factory!!! Had to use a wrap wrench and I sure as heck did not drain the oil before getting it lose just in case... So milimeter by milimeter I got it lose and changed the oil.... Then the NERVE of the owners manual to state NOT to OVERTIGHTEN as it may cause damage.... Gees!!! They need to take some of thisr own medicine. I have wonderful bruises all over my hands this morning and a finger 2x bigger than it was before I started!

 

they didn't overtighten it ...when they set up the motor and before install they spray the whole thing (including oil filter) with clear coat...in other words "THEY PAINT SEAL IT ON ...LOL better to let them do the first I'll do the rest !!

 

yep, the 1st one isnt really fun.

 

losen while the engine is cold.this helps because it was installed when it was cold.the heat expands the seal making it hard to remove.

 

cummins also does not lube the oring when installing from the factory. that and the clear coat, really glues that baby on.

 

Did my 1st change last week. Man was that clear coat hard to break loose . Went to a buddies shop to do it. To make it worse, the lift couldn't even pick the truck up!

 

Thanks! I was wondering what that Gritty crud was on the outside of the filter!!!! Had no idea about the clear coat. Why would they clearcoat it??? FOr "Looks"??? My oil drain plug was NOT as tight as I would have liked it either... It's always good to goover the truck when new!!

Only time I get under is to drain the oil, and put the plug back in.
I pull the filter from the top, pull the air intake tube/piping, then its easy to get to from the top. Id never do it from the bottom and risk a face/ear full of oil

 

i am changing mine right now for the first time and i stil cannot get it off, i am using strap wrench, and still not coming off, is there something else i can use to try and get this bastard off? thanks in adv,

This is what it took to get my filter off for the first time. I tried a cap type and strap typed, didn't budge. Had to go to Sears and get one of these. KD tools also makes this type of wrench.

After you get the first one off oil changes are easy.

Got mine off through the right wheel well. Pull the wheel liner back and there it is.

 

Wow.that's definitely THE TOOL!

 

I use the same tool as LongRanger and had no problem getting the first filter off at all. Easy to get to from the bottom. I bought my wrench at the local Arctic Cat dealer to remove the filter on our 4-stroke snowmobile. Our cost was MUCH higher. The best filter wrench I have ever had.
