Exhaust Brake Decreases HP/Torque??

If a free flowing exhaust system increases performance, will installing an exhaust brake decrease performance?

Basically, an exhaust brake closes off or restricts the exhaust from exiting the engine thus making it harder to turn over thus slowing the vehicle down. When not used, the butterfly or flap is in the open position. Does the small surface area of this flap (in the open position) have any noticeable effect on performance or MPG?

I didn't see or feel any when I installed mine. Mileage is the same also.

Thanks Spots!

I ordered mine when I ordered my truck. However, the dealer held off on installation because his service department has not done many of these and wants to call in a Cummins guy to do the install. Pretty funny! I'm glad he is honest about it and doesn't try the install himself if he's that unsure about it.

So, waiting so long has got me thinking about my necessity for it. Do I really need it? Will it hurt of help overall drivability? I think its a great feature to have especially with larger tires (going for 315's) and towing a trailer.

I installed a d-celerator brake on my 04 and it is actually one size larger than the exhaust. I am well pleased with its operation. Installed it myself in a couple of hours. The wiring takes most of the time. It does not cut down on the exhaust. It operates with a waste gate and does a jam up job. I came down a 6% grade for about 4 miles towing a 9000 lb trailer and it held back in 6th gear below 60 mph.

if I had a manual tranny, I would get one- Even though I don't tow anything heavy.

I installed mine myself. It's not complicated, and saved me some cash.

Download instructions here, if you like:

I also did not notice any change in milage or power.

This is my second exhaust brake (had one on my old 95) and would not be without it. Did not see any difference is power with it or without it.
