Engine swap 04 2wd into a 03 4wd...will it work?

I just bought a 2003 dodge 5.9 with 4wd, I got a good deal on it becuase some guy put new injectors in it and left #6 loose and damaged the piston. So basically I need to resleeve the current motor and put in a new piston and injector, or I know of a guy selling a 2004 5.9 engine that came out of a 2wd truck with 49K miles for a good price. Will the 2004 2wd motor bolt right up? I know i will have to change the oil pan becuase it is different but, I want to know if that is all or is it not even worth it? thanks

not sure, but i was told that is the 2004 motor not a 2004.5....its a 2004 with 305hp not the 2004.5 with 325. I am fairly certain these two engines are pretty similar but just the 2wd and 4wd situation are my concern.

If its a 305/555 engine no problems swapping. The HO's were the same engine from 03-04. The SO's were different but the electronics would work on either one. Is the target truck and HO?

clarify what you mean by so and ho. They should swap right over then right? I know the ecm will be different.

Standard Output = 250 HP, High Ouput = 305 HP

The engines themselves will interchange between the SO and HO as long as they are both pre 04.5 manufacture. The diffferences between SO and HO are internal to the engine and allow the HO to make more power with less chance of problems.

Your looking at an HO engine for a replacement. If the truck your putting it in is an SO it will still only have SO power because the power is controlled by the ECU and you will have to use the ECU that goes with the chassis as they are VIN locked to the other 5 or 6 modules in the truck.

If you put an SO in an HO chassis then you have to be careful with added power and how hard you push it because of the differences.

No, you have to use the ECM off your engine. The PCM is seperate on your 03 and in the ECU on the 04's. You cannot swap ECU's between chassis unless you reprogram them. Your stuck with whatever your truck is unless you go with something like a Smarty that will bring the SO even with the HO.
