Engine stalling

I'm wondering if I'm having problems with my lift pump. The last couple of times I've been out my engine stalled on me - no warning, running rough or anything. It just stalls suddenly. Both times it started again after waiting a few seconds. A while back I was a few miles from home and suddenly all I could do was maybe 25 mph. When I got home I changed the fuel filter and it hasn't done that since except that it seemed to kind of sputter a bit when I took off at the lights a few days ago. Anybody got any ideas?

Verify proper low pressure fuel supply to the high pressure pump: Perform the
appropriate fuel supply system flow test. NOTE: This procedure can be slightly
different depending on if the vehicle has an engine-mounted transfer pump or
the in-tank transfer pump. In a good low pressure fuel system, fuel flow of 560 mL in
10 seconds or better is expected for model year 2003 and early 2004 vehicles. In a
good low pressure fuel system, fuel flow of 590 mL in 10 seconds or better is expected
for late model year 2004 through 2007 vehicles. Be sure there is no air in the system.
Is the low pressure fuel supply volume sufficient?

I've got the engine mounted pump. For the flow test do I take the pump off the canister and just run it for a while to see what kind of fuel flow I'm getting?

That's the one. So is there a "good, better, best" as far as alternatives go? It's something I don't know a whole lot about. I don't really want to spend big bucks but if I have to do something anyway I may as well put in something worth while. Thanks for the input so far.

There are replacement pumps such as Fass, but I would go with in tank pump. They have a retrofit pump that comes with all the hardware and wiring to replace external pump. Sells for around $300.00 at Dodge dealership. I install them all the time and takes about 2 hours. But you need to drop fuel tank to install new fuel pump module. Install a relay and wiring and remove old pump and install new fitting at fuel filter housing. Piece of cake.

I've got this engine in an Excursion. Do you know if putting the pump you are talking about into that tank would be an issue at all? I'm just wondering about the way it gets mounted.
