Engine shot
I can't find the info I read this from, but the #6 cylinder rings cracking problem has been related to the cooling system not being properly cleaned and flushed. Cummins sells a coolant cleaner / flush for the cooling system. Just changing the radiator coolant and or flushing out with water will not remove the sedement that collects in the bottom of the block at the # 6 cyl.
I had an 05 cummins that was always maintained regularly at the dealer. Sold it to my Dad with 145,000km. It now has 160,800 Km. Just over warranty limit for the milage. He calls me and says that it is down 8 liters of oil in 3000 Km. A local diesel mechanic says it is a common problem caused by poor fuel filtration and a rebuild will be 15,000. I feel like hell for selling it to him, as I thought is was in great shape. Any thoughts if this is the cause of the oil usage, rebuild price and repair options. I have a couple other of these trucks and don't want this to happen to them either, how do you prevent this?
Thanks
Thanks
Just wondering what brand of oil filter you were running. There have been reported cases of pieces of oil filter "glue" plugging up the nozzles that spray oil up into the cylinders. Personally, I don't run anything other than Fleetguard or Mopar, both approved by Cummins.
