Engine running and leaving truck

Tried searching and didn't come up with much. But I would like to keep the engine running while running short errands and stuff. Just wanted to see what people were doing and what options there were. I'll eventually get a smarty jr. in the future and like the high idle and was wondering if that'd be possible with a remote start. Kind of a two part question I guess. I live on the 3rd floor for the time being and would like to warm it up before heading off.

I would like to have the key removable, so as not to seem like a tempting target.

Most aftermarket remote starters allow you to turn them on while the truck is running, shut the ignition off and remove the key while keeping the truck running. I forget the technical name for it, but that is possible. I assume you own an 06, as far as turning on the high idle from the remote start it may be possible. You would have to get a remote start has aux functions available through the remote and then take a look at the wiring diagrams to figure out how to turn it, shouldnt be that hard.

My "rule of thumb" is to never idle longer than 5 minutes.I would rather drive the truck gently until fully warmed up.Here in Vermont it takes forever to warm up my truck if it is just sitting and idling. Also,I read somewhere that excessive idling loads the engine/engine oil with soot.Makes sense to me.

I have the remote start and it facilitates what you are wanting to do very well. It is also time adjustable to allow it to idle for as long as 30 minutes.

YOU might check and see what the law says about leaving the truck idle. There is some tough laws about leaving one idle. They can be some high dollar fines. Every state has it own laws.---Good Luck

I have a 07 auto, and had the dealer put in a Astro start. It is a car alarm/ starter, that lets U leave it running, then U can take out the key, and run into a store. The automatic hi idle will still work, I haven't tried the manual hi idle using the cruise control. Remote has 1200 foot range if I remember. $1000 Canadian installed

As others have said, you may want to look into your state laws about idling a vehicle. I know for the City around my area, you are not allowed to idle a vehicle longer than 5 minutes, unless it falls under certain conditions (it has a list).

If I am going in somewhere quick and I know I am not going to be long, I will leave my truck running, however I will remove my keys from the ignition and lock both doors (I am able to remove my keys while the ignition is on,lol).

if you are going to leave it idling it is best to click on high idle to raise oil pressure. it does not hurt a diesel to idle for hours on end. just need to raise idle to increase oil pressure.

I had a second key made just for unlocking the doors. I put on my "Club" lock the doors and let her idle. But that's the cheapy way of doing it.

I have the factory alarm/keyless entry. What I do is leave it idling with the key in the ignition and take the alarm remote with me. I use the remote to lock and unlock the doors while it's running. Of course I never wander too far away from the truck but it works well if I'm just running inside the quickie-mart to buy a soda or something.

I have an AviStart aftermarket remote start/keyless system. It allows me to start the truck with the remote and let it idle for up to 60 minutes (mine is set for 20). It also has a "cool-down" feature that allows me to leave the truck secured while it idles for about 5 minutes. I seldom use this feature, but it's handy to have.

i thought the new CR trucks had problems with low cylider wall/ combustion chamber temps which leads to fuel washing the cyl walls and scored sleeves....so high idle warms things up abit + oil pressure??? some belive some don't...i personally let mine run but use the hi idle....

With the newer trucks you cant do that. Key and remote are all one.
