Engine running hot

I just got back from a 600 mile trip (unloaded the entire way). I noticed on the way up and back my truck's water temp. was right at 200* the entire time. Usually the thing runs around 180* and only goes up to 200* when I pull a long grade. Then the temp will drop back down to 180* on the downside of the grade. Even on the downside of the grade, the thing stayed right at 200* (it maybe dropped a smidgin, nothing big though) the whole time. What gives? I don't have any guages yet, so I have no idea what the egt's were. I checked radiator fluid: full and clean. I'm creepin' up on 15k and I'm due for an oil change. Would this cause it? I wouldn't think so, but who knows. I noticed my air filter is pretty dirty, but I haven't replaced it yet cause I wanna keep all my maintenance numbers in order. Would a dirty air filter cause higher engine temps? Filter minder is still in the green. I'm not really sure I trust the stupid thing though. Oh yeah, outside temps were about 65-70 or so. Thanks in advance.

I'm confused. Not that your shifter isn't important, I'm just not sure what it has to do with my engine running hot.

My 05 runs just a "---- hair" south of 200*unloaded, had about 3000# in the bed last weekend, it went up to 200* but never climbed above it. And anyway, does anyone know what that wire thing is that's in front of the fan clutch. It comes up front the bottom the rad, then goes up and best I can see, curves over near fan clutch. and Little E blew and engine today, maybe he should run a cummins

My guess is it's a temp. sensor that let's the fan know when to turn on and off. Just my theory anyway. Anywho, my truck has always run well under two hundo...even on long trips. This was the first time it's run steady at 200. Wasn't sure why the change all of a sudden. I wish I had EGT before and after to see if that changed.

I see 200 degrees often down here. Usually going up long hills or pulling a trailer. Pretty much normal.
I believe the Tstat is 195 degrees.

OK, lemme ask this question then. Will a dirty air filter (basically it needs to be replaced) cause higher than normal engine temps?

Might see 'slightly' higher temps. Will have less boost with a really dirt filter.
