engine running away

What's the problem when you take your foot off the throttle and the engine revs high for a couple of seconds before it idles down. I was dragging a round bale thru the snow in 4wd high, and spinning out cause i'm dragging a lot of snow. So when I got to where I wanted to stop, I backed off but it kept revving for a bit longer (felt like a long time especially with the fence coming up ) Is that something to do with injectors leaking or some electronic thing. I swear this truck has got more wires than anything else. I noticed it does it too when just revving it up while parked, it seems like its just on the verge of a runaway.
As far as I know its all stock.

Have any mods to the truck? Mine will do that on the quad race setting......but only for a few seconds. You kinda get used to it and learn to drive it that way. Only in the race setting! Never ahd it happen on any other setting.

Oh, I should have added its got 70,000 miles, automatic tranny, I'm the second owner as of 2 weeks ago, and it was really cold here that day, like -28 Cel. A few other things weren't working right in the cold, like the park indicator, so everytime I jumped out, the horn alarm would scare the crap out of me.

Mines got a bit of hang time if I don't get off the throttle a hair earlier. Maybe a bit to do with turbo-boost relief lag. Can be a bit surprising in some situations.

Man, I tell you what a sphincter shrinking feeling that is, the fence is coming up, the truck is still revving, and be damned if it wasn't finding more traction at that moment. I guess if that's normal, I'll get used to it. After waiting for 10 days to get an appointment, I'm finally getting her in to get the injectors checked tomorrow, it's got that engine/injector knock when warm like I've read about here. Just after I picked it up I noticed it had a bit of a knock, the service manager at the dealer listened to it and revved it up to see how much hang time it had. He said it gets worse if there is an injector spitting fuel but not to worry, it didn't sound bad yet. Just wondering if this sounds right or not.
How do they check them anyways? Do they pull em out and test them on a bench tester or just hook the whole truck up to some tester thing? Cause I'm wondering if I should get them to check the valve lash also, if they get that far into it. I don't really know how much they'll do for me, but they did say it normally wouldn't be covered under warranty. But since I just bought it, they'll make it right. yada yada yada

I like how you have 3 diesels in your sig

I only get that hang when down on the throttle and the engine hasn't caught up to it yet, like when yanking a bale. I think it's just inherent in the whole turbo diesel thing.

Can't help with your other ??

Your engine including fuel system should be under warranty until 100K miles unless it's different up there in the great white north.

I can get a "hang" or lag, however you want to look at it. If I am backing up the drive and sort of hit the peddal down more than normal, almost as if I was going to rev it, then it will do it. But I think it is just the fly-by throtle cetting a head of the engine, or vise a versa. I push the pedal quickly moving a rheostat, and let off quickly, letting the rheostat return, all that quick movement the engine hasn't responded yetso it seems like a delay or hang. Any idea what I am trying to say??? Just my thery.

Yeah, I get ya, could be. I have kinda seen it in gas turbo cars too just not as dramatic, that's why I expected it was from the turbo.

Maybe it's just hard to shut the beast down after you kick it.

Pretty sure every truck does this if you are in high rpms? What kind of rpms where you running when this happend. Typically it is the rail delivering all the extra fuel into the cylinder and burning it off instead of having a pressure spike. Think of it as your running 20,000psi into that cylinder then all of a sudden just back off the throttle and it has no where to go. It's just getting rid of all the pressure in the system. Next time your in your truck free rev it to about 3k and it will do the same thing. I am not for certain on this but just taking a stab at it.

due to electronic controlled high pressure pumps,if you shut it down the engine can't run away with fuel, but it could run away with oil if you got a bad seal in your turbo or wiper ring.

Whoo! I hope its nothing like that Mike.

I keep comparing how this truck acts compared to my 93 1st Gen truck, I've never noticed it running on like this one. But then I have to remind myself that there's no way I'd be dragging bales thru the snow with the old 2wd, plus it's a 5 sp so I guess I'd just stomp on the clutch.

Well, hopefully things go well at the dealers, I'll try to find out how they test the injectors. Its warmed up quite a bit today, so everything is working more smoothly.
