Engine Leaks
Engine Leaks
Hi everybody, I have a 2003 CTD Dodge Ram 3500 DRW 2WD and just last Friday I noticed that I had a coolant leak. Turns out it is the water pump, I called Cummins and they are getting one for me either today or tommorow.
Well after I found my coolant leak I dug around my motor for almost an hour looking at every little nook and cranny I could. I got out the flashlights and mirrors and started investigating and I found some leaks. The first one looks like it's coming from behind the balancer, I'm guessing it's the front main. It doesn't look that bad, it's just a little drip that if forming. I thought that it might be coming from one of the bolts that hold the timing cover on, is that possible.
The other one I can't really tell what it is. It's coming from around where the #5 injector line goes into the valve cover. I'm not sure if it's oil or fuel. There's also some kind of sensor right above that line, does anyone know what that is?
The last one I noticed is on the passanger side of the valve cover towards the back of the motor. it looks like it's just a small valve cover leak, but when I was looking at the valve cover I got a little confused, is the valve cover in two pieces? I'm not talking about the black cover with Dodge and 24V on it, below that it looks like there is like a wall (lack of better words) that sits on top of the head with a gasket in between and then the cover sits on top of that with another gasket in between them. The leak is coming from between the head and the lower part of what I think is all part of the valve cover. I've never had to mess with these motors before, so I'm just getting used to it and I guess I need a little help. Has anyone had similar leaks to these? Are they all easy and/or cheap fixes?
Two of these leaks are just a little seepage that I'm going to keep an eye on, but the one up front concerns me the most!
Thanks in advance!

I need help with h20 pump
I replaced my water pump last night. It was pretty easy, I left the fan and shroud on. I thought I would have to take them off, but it worked out that I didn't. I put in the new pump which included the pully and new o-ring. The hardest part of it all was the **** belt, it took longer to get the belt back on than it did everything else. After I got it on I flushed the system with one of those Prestone kits. It worked pretty good, not a lot of crud in there at all. When I ran the motor after refilling the radiator I noticed that after a few seconds there was what sounded like a rattling noise. It sounded sort of like metal on metal. I shut it down and checked my bolts and everything else I touched, it all looked good. I started it up again and it was there. I drove the truck around for a while and the noise just got louder when the rpm's increased. When I got back I listened to it a little closer and it's more like a chatter, it's not a constant noise. You know the noise of a baseball card in a bike wheel, there's like a split second between each time it makes a noise, well that's how this sound is. But instead of a smack it's more like a rattle. I got a little curious and sprayed some belt dressing on the h20 pully and the noise went away for about 10-20 seconds then it came back. Is this just the belt slipping on the new h20 pully? Is this common? How much longer till I can expect it to go away? I thought it was something internal, but the belt dressing wouldn't fix that would it?
Sorry for such a long post, but I just wanted to be as specific as possible.
Thanks!
