Engine knock...

Recently noticed a sound similar to that of a knocking rod coming from the engine of my 2003 Ram 2500 5.9 TD. Also, the truck began idling rough about the same time the knocking began. Here are a few more details regarding the knocking and the rough idle...

1) I can hear the knock when the trucks idling in gear, but isn't present when the trucks in park, in neutral, accelerating or at highway speed.

2) Also, while in gear & at idle w/my foot on the break, the knock changes in intensity whenever the the steering wheel is turned.

3) As for the rough idle... the engine idles fine when the trucks in park but idles rough when the trucks in gear and I'm stopped at an intersection (etc.) with my foot on the break.

4) In light of the knock & rough idle... there's been no check engine light and no derivability issues.

5) About the time the knocking and rough idle began, I left the truck idling in park for about 2 hours... could this have damaged the engine?

Thoughts anyone??? I'm freaking out this might be something major!?

I am thinking injector or flywheel. I could tell more if I heard it

Though I'd also suspect injectors, I'd check the torque converter bolts first...

From: North Carolina or Kentucky. Take your pick
Now that engine is broken in, it's the torque under load engine bending 4 hz vibration from not using 3 oz of dexron ATF in each oil change. HA!
So many of these engines have knocks that get under owners skin, it is good ideal to let somone evulate and give you some relief. Probablly nothing to worry about.
