Engine hours vs. mileage on odometer
#47
I recently bought an 04.0 with a little over 41,000 miles on it. At the time I bought it, I didn't realize I could check the engine hours. Anyways, it turns out that the truck has around 3000 hours on it with only 41,000 miles. Averaged out to around 14 miles per hour. I'm really starting to wonder if this is due to a lot of idling or if someone has actually rolled back the miles on the odometer. The truck sure seems to be in good shape, but that seems to be an awful lot of hours for the miles on it. Does anyone know if there is any way to tell if the odometer has been changed? Wasn't sure if a change like that left any software trail that could be detected. I did run a car fax prior to buying the truck and there wasn't an indication of odometer fraud, but after reading an article in the paper a few days back about odometer fraud being a big issue, I have really began to wonder.

Was gonna sue him, but decided that i'll deal with him face to face next time i'm in Colorado, which will be soon enough.

How does someone roll back the odometer on these computerized trucks? Must have to be a software genius.

Yeah I am not sure... I thought the entire dash was powered by the ECU, which is why there is a speedo/tach lag and the oil, volt, coolant aren't 100% accurate. So if the ECU says there is 120K, then the dash should say 120K... I wonder if the dealer meant that the hours are more in line for 120K, based on average.... Really 120K or 80K, whats the difference.. These are 300K plus motors, I read cummins put out 450K on the 3rd gen recently.

Software exits to calibrate odometers. If one has to be switched out (for whatever reason) dealers recalibrate the new odometer to match the original miles. I don't like the idea of buying a truck that appears to only have 40 thousand miles on it only to find out that it may very well have 80 to 100 thousand on it. I agreed on a price for that truck based on it having 40 thousand miles. It's just frustrating.

But I don't think the 03+ dogde keeps that info in the dash, its in the ECM.. so only the ECM would need to be recalibrated... meaning that if the ECM shows 40K then the dash shows 40K.

My 06 has 25,800 miles and 701 hours. 36.8 mphavg, normal I guess. After reading some of these posts, If I ever get a used truck, you bet I will check the hours. Good way to let one know when to pass on one.
