Engine codes and idle problem

New guy here and I need some help. I am not sure where to post this but,

I just purchased a 2003 1 ton C/C 6spd 5.9L. 4x4. 130 K miles and truck seems to run ok and got 20 MPG on the 250 mile trip home from Texas.

The issues: Idle goes to 1100 often, normally stays around 850 on first start. I noticed when the idle is high, if you turn on the A/C it comes back down, I tried messing w/the throttle, no joy.

Hard starting, (takes 5-10 secs to fire up, longer on 1st attempt)

I found the following codes : 0633,(SKIM Key not programmed)
0602,(control module not programmed/error)
2509 (ecm/pcm power input signal intermittent)
0234 (T/C engine over boost condition)
What if anything do these mean?
I know nothing about diesels, or where to even begin. I know the dealer installed a new battery, and the previous owner had put on a straight pipe exhaust. I am hoping to find out if anything might be expensive to get fixed or is a major problem.......if so I will try and take this truck back...Thanks in advance, Jay, Oklahoma City

By no means am I an expert here so hopefully some of the experts that are on here will speak up. Heres what I got:

Idle issue- In cold weather the ECM will automatically run the engine up to high idle (around 1100) when the engine is not at operating temp or in extreme cold to keep it there. I know on an auto if you tap the brake it goes back to normal idle- not sure on a 6-speed. Try tapping the brake when it idles high and see if it stops. If so I would say you have a sensor or something acting up as stated by someone else on another of your posts. Sounds like a dealer fix if so. High idle shouldn't kick in if temps are in the 50s.

I would say possibly a problem with the heater grid but a cummins should still start OK in those temps even ifd it takes a little extra cranking - but definately not what your experiencing. You mentioned a clogged air filter on another post so that is a sign of poor maintenance by the previous owner IMO. I would put my money on the fuel filter. I have had problems numerous times with several different diesel engines all caused by a dirty fuel filter. I would definately change it even if it doesn't cure your problem it probably needs it. I dont know but it may be possible that the ECM is noticing the drop in fuel pressure from a clogged filter and engaging the high idle for some strange reason. Hopefully someone else will chime in but good luck - just dont give up, youll figure it out - you can't let a machine be smarter than you!

P.S - you posted in the right thread this time - be sure and post up what you find so rest of us can learn from it too! Welcome to this awesome site!

Thanks for the info.

Checked waste gate for issues, found hose with bolt stuffed in it. Still no idea where it is supose to connect to.

Update, 43 degrees here in Oklahoma city this morning. Long crank time...turns into.. No start. Several attempts, cycling grid heater, no joy. Cracked open fuel drain to check for water... none, plugged in block heater.(only god knows why) walked away mad.

Calmed down hour later, tried to start, and fired up. On my way to r/r fuel filter and find a local dealer for help since the dealer I got if from 5 days ago is 258 miles away, Who I called this morning asking to take it back.. so Im gonna go spend some more $$ just to tell them whats wrong. Thanks again, I will keep you posted.

NO rocket scientist here but if you plugged it in and raised the engine coolant temp and it fired it makes me wonder if for some unruly reason someone has hit your engine with ether. Seems like some of our construction diesel equipment that has been hit with ether are never the same after and have a hard time starting when outside temps drop.

MY .02 cents

Replaced fuel filter, and lots of junk found in my bucket. The old filter looked ok...with the naked eye. Truck fires right up now. The long cranking thing has gone away but I am still cautious about the cold start problem and wierd idle sometimes. Truck still going to local dealer tonight to see what they can find.

I have a Buddy that just got him a 03 with a 6 speed and it idles good till you rev it up then it wont come back down below 1000 rpm unless you put it in gear and load the engine then it idles normal. The truck has an juice with attitude and injectors but that shouldn't play a part in this issue. I have work on many trucks but never seen that happen that bad.
