Yes, his truck is still stock other than a torque tube and a custom exhaust stack. I know because I was giving him hell on how bad I was going to walk the floor with him when I actually start putting parts on mine. Not sure what filter he was running, but he's probably going to tear into it this weekend and I'm gonna stand there looking stupid trying to figure out what happened. I talked to him right after, and the motor was still warm from an earlier trip, but even cold shouldn't it have just blew a freeze plug?

I'm trying to convince him to get a block that I found in Missouri to rebuild, but we're really not going to know what all is needed until after he rips into the current one.

I found a 40k motor in KY going to get it in the morning. Motor, trans, transfercase complete with all accessories. Yes, I know I have a two wheel drive but you know spare parts to trade.
The motor was still warm from just coming back from a parts run. I run Wix oil filters if that is a bad thing I guess someone will let me know. Knalb just thinks wait, hopes he will be able to beat me some day.
I hope to have the old motor out by sunday night. Crap that reminds me got to move the jetskis out of the shop and into the garage. The list of crap never ends. Got to do six things to get one done.

Got to do six things to get one done Wow - that sounds like me!

First, sorry to hear about this - not a good thing to have happen. Hope you are able to get it removed and replaced soon. Cummins may want to know about it, they could do a little more in-depth failure analysis.

Good luck!

The Wix filter may have caused you a problem. It's happened before with other oil filters, they come apart you loose the motor. I would only run Fleetguard oil filters.

Its possible you may have bent a rod somehow. The CR rods are strong as long as they are straight.. however if one gets bent somehow through water getting in the cylinder or something they splinter and window the block. Usually if one goes it takes a couple with it. There have been a couple cases of it on CompD that I have read about. Im gonna be upgrading to VP rods and 04 pistons, injectors and ecu if and when funds allow.

The guy lost the motor at just under 340,000 miles and you say it must have been the Wix oil filter? The motor is rated for 350,000 miles.

Well, we got the "new-to-me" motor back to Texas at oh dark thirty yesterday morning. If anyone is curious, I recommend having 1500lb of weight in the bed. It really smooths out the ride in a 3rd gen 4x4.

RVPro will have more info when it's available, but the tear down has already begun.

I agree BUT the rating at 350,000 miles is for a rebuild using rings, bearings, gaskets, etc., not for windowing the block!!!!

seriously guys. The filter thing is nuts. I can tell you this, if it was the filter, it was just a bad filter and that could happen to any company including fleetgaurd. I use nothing but WIX and although I only have 123,000 on my truck, I am sure the filters are fine.

It does suck that it blew up, but if I get anywhere close to that mileage before catastrophic damage, I won't be upset one bit.

Windowed blocks are caused by only 2 things, broken piston, letting the rod come loose and spin around, or broken rod. Most of the time when I see those happen at work its caused by a dropped valve. Drop a valve it hits the piston in numerous bad ways, run it long enough that way and either the rod breaks or the piston comes apart then you get to see through the block. Happens all the time with high mile, high hour engines. Valves tend to be the weakest link as far as metal fatigue goes.

Thumbs up Great attitude bud!

It sucks for sure but ya gotta admire RVPro’s attitude, he’s not whining or complaining about it, just goes about business to find a new power plant, deserving of an ATTA BOY!
