EGT readings pulling.....100 km/hour

At 100 km/hour towing my 34 foot 10,000lb trailer on FLAT grade highway I saw 1250 EGT constant in Overdrive. When i switched to TOW/HAUL and pulled it in 3rd I saw 950 egt......Is this normal?

I have never had an auto but it sounds normal. Overdrive off you would have a few more rpm and moving more air through it. I am sure the auto guy's will chime in.

Seems pretty warm for a flat grade

Maybe time to take the Juice off.

I haven't pulled much with my auto but in my six speed when you have to slow down to 60-65 for turns if you down shifted to 5th your EGTs would go way down compared to lugging it in 6th. Similar temps to what your describing. Once I sped up to 75-80 MPH then I would shift back into 6th and be fine.

I pull about that weight and I don`t see that temp unless I`m pulling a hill. I think my pyro is about 800-950 on flat ground. It might be the Juice settings or air flow.

It's a little high but it won't hurt anything. My '03 would run about 1000 under those same conditions.

i have my isspro boost gauge hooked up and its exact with the edge. maybe a 1-2 psi off. When my edge says 35 psi so does my isspro. i can see 35 psi boost with my edge on setting 1 or 2. is this normal? I think i see it on stock setting as well?

im half way done hooking up my isspro egt gauge so once its in ill unhook edge juice and compare readings.

when i climb steep grades (which are in saskatchewan) , I see 1300-1450 egt once i get near the top. i never see those temps for more than 30 seconds. But still that seems hot.

My buddys duramax with pyro never sees over 900 egt pulling 5000 lb boat up a hill

What setting do you have your Edge set at? You may want to turn it down some or even back to stock if the ETG are getting to high.

Just out of curosity how tall is your trailer. I find it sometimes is not the weight as much as the drag of the trailer causing the truck to works hard possibly elevating your EGTs. About the same weight on flat ground I see about 900-950 (verified via 2 independent Pyros and gauges), but that is pulling a V-nose that only sits up about 1 foot above the truck. Put a barn door back there and I gaurentee my truck would be working harder...

I've seen those temps on flat ground bucking a 20 mph head wind. 75 mph into a 20+ mph head wind. 1250*, & 23# boost on flat ground. My barn door is overhanging my windshield thoe.

What are the rpms associated with that?

Also I bet your buddies Dmax pyro is post turbo as they run VERY hot.

My 03 with Edge pulling a high nose Fiver, 14K lbs., runs around 850 to 900 unless starting off (with foot stuck in it) or on long grades. I never let it go over 1250. I'll down shift or back off on it to make it go down. I have a 48RE trans. 1300 starts cooking the turbo seals if you keep it there long. Max is 1500 for extremely short time and then damage can possibly occur.

The 03 is different than the 04.5 and later. The 04.5 and later run hotter due to the extra injection event...

Get your hottest readings with a stock program and use those as a baseline "limit." I don't think the aftermarket gauges are very accurate, due to variations in probe placement, depth, etc. People with stock engines are reporting wildly varying readings under similar conditions, leading me to believe that the gauge is not an absolute, but rather a relative reference point. If the hottest you ever saw stock is 1100, I wouldn't push it past that after mods. Similarly, if your truck is maxing out at 1450 stock, I would feel safe going that high even after mods.

I got the following response from an inquiry directly to Cummins:
Regarding your inquiry about Safe EGTs.

Thanks for your Email message. You have contacted Cummins, Inc. at our
Customer Assistance Center located in Columbus, Indiana. This is our
worldwide headquarters and has been our home since Clessie Cummins founded
the company February 3, 1919.

Cummins engines, working near the limit of their capability, can produce
exhaust gas temperatures in the range of about 1300 degrees F when measured
before the turbocharger. We do not give out maximum (DO NOT EXCEED)
exhaust temperatures because pyrometers, especially the type that are sold
for automotive use, are often inaccurate and have a time lag between when a
temperature is generated and when it is displayed.

Aftermarket uprate hardware can change fueling, timing and boost. These
products can produce huge changes in exhaust temperatures.

Engines that have not been altered from their as-manufactured state will
not produce dangerously high exhaust temperatures. We would not know
exhaust temperature might be dangerous for engines that have been modified.

In a nutshell - a stock engine will not melt down, and similar EGT's after bombing shouldn't either.
