Dyno

I am thinking about dynoing my new 05 cummins with a 6 speed. What I was wondering about is what gear is 1.0 ratio or direct gear to pull it in? I took off the res and muff and put a straight pipe in. I also have a AFE Stage 2 with Edge Att/Juice. I want to see what it pulls in stock form and test level 5 to see how much of a gain. Let me know any input on which gear to pull it in thanks.

What kind of dyno are you going to dyno on?

I know on the NV5600 5th gear is 1:1.

Dyno

I am using a Dynojet Dyno tonight. The mods I have is Edge juice, AFE Stage 2, silencer ring removed, Straight exhaust with no Res. It has 600 miles on the truck. It is a NV5600 and I see that the 5th gear is 1.0 ratio. Now I am wondering what kind of numbers I am going to be putting down since it is my first time on the dyno with a diesel.

I would guess around 360-375rwhp on Level 5. That is what I dyno'd with about the same mods and a 48re in 3 gear lockup(1:1) on a 04.5 600 on a DynoJet.

Ram what about TQ? How much did you have with about the same mods? Do you think winter fuel will post a lower number than #2?

Dynojet you use 6th gear.
Not 5th.

I predict 420-440hp and 840 ft lbs

I really doubt that you will see much over 375rwhp, the Juice/Attitude is 100hp on level 5. Most stock 325/600 and up have dyno'd 265-280rwhp stock, so you do the math. The place I normally dyno does not have an optical pickup for torque for their DynoJet so I just get HP numbers there.

I did not run mine hard on level 5 when my tc/transmission were stock. I could make the tc slip some on level 5 if I tried, but in general held pretty good and no problems on level 4.

I don't think anyone down here switches to winter blend, 75* today, so I really don't know. I would expect some loss dynoing with winter blend from what I have heard about it.

Well i Got back from the dyno and on stock level it put down 271hp and just over 510 ft. lbs of tq. Now in level 5 (125hp) it put down 422.2 and almost 770 ft lbs. I am impressed with the number since I bought the truck new this month and am running winter fuel. I pulled it in 5th gear not 6th because 5th is direct and 6th is .73.

I am impressed also. Your stock dyno is right on average from all I have seen. So your truck makes an extra 150rwhp with the Juice/Attitude. Every truck seems to react to mods a little differently, yours seems to love the Juice/Attitude.

You probably would have increased your torque numbers running it in 6th gear.

Most if not all diesels that run on dyno jets dyno in the OD gear for maximum power and torque.

I ran mine on a dynojet, and I wish I had done it in 5th gear instead of 4th, which 1:1 in my transmission. My results were 325 hp, 572 ft/lbs. That does not sound at all right for what's been done to my truck. Having the 4.10's instead of the 3.54's also does not help, since my drivetrain has to speed up that much more to produce a given increase in wheel speed. I think the basic problem with dynoing these trucks on regular dynos is that the dyno drum is so light, it doesn't provide NEAR the load the trucks see just going down the road. That being the case, the truck wheel speed increases much faster on the dyno than in real life, which means it must use a greater portion of its power just accelerating the engine and drivetrain at the higher rate. I can tell you one thing-my truck does not drive or pull like it only has 325 hp and 572 ft/lbs!

If possible you would always want ot run in your 1:1 gear to get an accurate reading. With a standard trans that would be always, unless you have a rev limiter that will not allow you to get to maximum rpm. With an auto you also want to run in your 1:1, unless you are having problems keeping the truck from downshifting or as stated above, you have an rpm limiter. Using anything but 1:1 will squew (sp?) the results when comparing to another truck.
