DTR braintrust ? on '07 5.9's
What's the particulars on the 07 5.9's,,,,, any problems or are the earlier 3rd generations better,,,, mainly talking fuel mileage and dependability.
Lost my truck in my signature line two weeks ago,,,, totaled out by a uninsured driver.
Any info appreciated to help me make this choice.

Can't go wrong with the last year of the 5.9.
I had an 05 and now an 07 and love them both. Drove 500 miles round trip last week taking my wife to the airport and averaged over 20 mpg hand calcd in a 3500 single rear wheel using 4x4 in snow conditions for 60 miles each way. There is no such thing as a 2010 truck that will compare to this.

07 added the ugly taillights IMHO although some guy like them. It also added the better stain resistant fabric to the seats. The 06-07's tend to run higher egt's stock than the 04.5-05's although that is easilly fixed with a Smarty or Smrty JR. 06 seems to be the year where the front end and drivleline components started to see a drop in quality as the u-joints/balljoints/unit bearings etc. seem to go out quicker.
BTW,
I love my 07 5.9 Mega and found the last one in a 3 state area when I started looking for a new truack a few years ago.

No complaints with my '07. Mileage is about 16 around town, maybe 18 on the highway if I keep it at 65.
Had the new front steering parts replaced under a TSB before the local Dodge dealer closed. Then there was the subsequent recall on the new steering parts and that was also done under warranty, though at a dealer about 40 miles further away.
This is by far my favorite pickup I have owned, first Dodge, but number 10 overall I think.

) I was pulling low 20's, so might be possible if driven verrrrry carefullllly.FWIW, my overhead has never been too far off. 1mpg or less too high. With the 285s (no speedo recal, still thinks it's running 31" tires (265s)) the speedo is a little slow on the hiway, but the overhead mileage is close now.
No problems on my 07 so far, 55k mi only though, but check out colo-dirtbikers truck. 06 with 275kmi + and he hasn't cracked open anything on the drivetrain except for a clutch or 2 and hauls RVs.
If you're looking for an 07 look for the AE G-56. It has the higher OD ratio.
After the mods below I get about 18.5 around town hand calculated.
If I take a long drive and keep the speed around 55 I can get just a hair over 20 mpg hand calculated.
I've found I can get the overhead closer to my calculations if I reset the overhead at each fillup. Before I never reset it and would get errors between 9 to 14% (I've got a spreadsheet with that and all other sorts of stuff in it). Each time I reset it the error is usually between 3 to 5%.

I'd pretty much throw the bs flag on 24-25mg, except downhill, but babying it around on state highways back east (55 saves lives

My overhead has said over 23-25 before... actual tanks were 18-19.5
i like my 07 5.9. ive never driven a 6.7 but im happy. 35k miles just ball joints and front u-joints so far have gone bad. milage is ok empty around town 15 and and 17 -19 hwy going 60-65. alot lower numbers in the winter though.
