I am having NO luck finding out what type of grease goes in the rear hub on my 03 DRW 2WD. I had to replace the rotor (on the rear) and finally got everythig apart, only to realize that inside the hub there is some special wheel bearing grease/gear lube.

It is very THIN wheel bearign grease, or a very THICK gear lube type substance. I can not find out what type of grease/lube is in there.

Any DRW owners have to replace or remove a rotor????? And if so, what type of grease/lube is in there????????

 

That's no special lube. It's burnt oil from DC running the level so low - I had it, too. I held my thumb over the fill hole and put in 5 qts when I refilled the diff. Then I drove thru a ditch to get fresh oil to the brgs. I also replied on your rotor thread. Craig

 

The only thing is though: My rear end was damaged in a collission, and they replaced the rear end (not the pads or rotors) but the actual housing/internals with a remanufactured unit. I drove the truck about 5K miles, did a rear end service and it has only been another 5 since. So, I only have 10K on the rear end (130K on the rotors).

And also, no fluid came out of the axle housing, but AROUND it, and around the bearings. It HAS to be some type of bearing grease, and it was red/pink in color?????

 

That should be gear oil, 75/90 synthetic. The wheel bearings are sullpied with oil from the diff.Some guys do run 80/140 syntheic

 

I do think that he needs to put in a limited slip additive , then its just a matter of syn. or not , what weight , Tex. you may not need to have as cold a flow issue .
I think that thicker is better for lube , but then more HPs to over come , less MPGs .
Its hard to have your cake & eat it too .

 

So, you guys are saying to throw everything back together, and just add diff fluid????

When I drained the diff fluid, 5K ago, it was not read/pink in color????? And then I added the Mobil 1 5K ago, and it is not red/pink, so what is this red/pink crap then???????

 

Not sure what the red/pink crap is. Clean it up, dip the bearings in gear oil. Put it together, top off diff(75/90synthectic is the recomended lube)AAM axles do not need the limited slip additive they have gears not clutch packs.

OK, clean it up, dip bearings in diff lube, throw it back together, and then add more diff lulbe through the fill hole?

So, just want to be perfectly clear on this: The bearings in the in the hub for the brake rotor, ARE lubricated from teh diff lube, and there is NO wheel bearing grease AT ALL on the rear?? Right?????

 

And sicne this rear end is a remanufactured unit, do you think it is possible that the guy that rebuilt it, added wheel bearing gease to the wheel bearings, and THAT is why it is red/pink in color around the bearings?????

 

that is how my truck is, its the one in my sig.Let me ask you this, when you pulled the axle, did oil run out? After you remove lock ring and nut, the pulled hub off was there not some oil in the hub where the bearings are. That oil should be the same color as in the pumkin.

The manual states there is a grease seal, I don't think they are lubed by diff oil, I think they are free standing wheel bearings packed in their own grease.

 

when I pulled mine off for the e brake it was in oil I assumed that was how it was lubed . I went and looked in a service manual and I Stand corrected it says to pack bearings in the approriate grease . I am sorry for the mis information.

 

NO, no oil came out.

 

What is the appropriate grease then????
