Driveline vibration U-Joints
Driveline vibration U-Joints
Last week my truck developed a vibration. I have a 2004.5 with 40K. I don't really tow heavy or abuse my truck. I've had H2's on for about 15K. The vibration showed up first upon decelerating, then at speed on the interstate, then the vibration upon deceleration became extremely violent. It felt like I was running over some rumble strips. When I jacked up the rear on my truck and put it in gear the complete driveshaft shook from the transfer case back through the drive shaft. We were able to stabilize the transfer case but there was still alot of vibration. I didn't have any ticking, and the shaft seemed to spin freely. I dropped the shaft and 2 of the 3 u-joints didn't spin freely. I had the 3 u-joints replaced and the hanger bearing. The hanger bearing was damaged due to the violent shaking of the drive shaft.
The shop that replaced the joints said the one of the u-joints just had dust where the needle bearings used to be.
The hanger bearing they used was just a universal style from Napa it's the same bearing size but it hangs 1/4 inch lower. It actually seems to have improved my driveline angle. This bearing was 60 the dealer wanted 160.

My rear u-joints are toast. Can someone tell me the NAPA part numbers for the rear shaft with 2 joints on a '04 ? NAPA can't seem to get it right. They gave me the wrong joints twice now. I remember someone posted the numbers a while back but I can't seem to find them now. Thanks for any help.
I took my complete drive shaft out and took it to The Napa machine shop. He measures the size of the caps and the overall size that's where I got that part number and measurement from. I believe those numbers should work for your truck.

MedicShawn, Thanks but those are the ones I just tried. The cap dia is right but they are about 1/8" to long. Will not fit into the yoke. I was just looking at the NAPA web site and there are about 5 pages of joints. I just can't believe it.
www.rockauto.com seemed to have better descriptions to help you find part numbers. But still lots of choices.
Precision #351's are whats used on 6 speed rear driveshafts whether it be 2 or 3 joint shaft.
But I did have to grind the caps down about an 1/16" on each side so they would fit.
But they work great and you save a junk load of money.
I got mine from rockauto.com also.
