Does brand of ATF+4 matter?

I change the ATF in my vehicles more often than required - figuring it's cheap insurance to avoid problems. It's easy to siphon the fluid from the dipstick tube and replace with fresh. Does it matter what brand I use to replace the fluid, since the new will mix with the old fluid that doesn't get drained? The dealer gets $8/quart for MOPAR, the local auto parts store gets $5 for Valvoline - both ATF+4.

I plan to have the dealer do the full maintenance at 30 K miles - drop the pan, change the filter etc - this is just a refresh at 15 K miles with whatever amount I can siphon out.

Thanks for your input

I don't think it makes any difference where you get the ATF +4. I just buy gallon jugs from the dealer and can usually get them to discount it some.

You might consider investing in a Mag-Hytec Double deep transmission pan. They add strength to the transmission case and allow you to drain the fluid, making it easier to remove the pan. Then you can change the Trans filter which needs to be done regularly too.

Also, just draining and refilling won't get all the fluid out. But it gets enough out that it keeps the fluid fresh. The mixing of some old with new will not hurt it.

FWIW, I change mine every 20k.

I wouldn't take it to the dealer if you are physically able to do it yourself. $$$

I just changed mine for the 3rd time and the Amsoil was just slightly and I mean just slightly darker coming out and the pan was clean as well. Make sure to get the whole system flushed out with new fluid.

Change your oil every 20,000-30,000 miles with new filter and don't worry about flushing every last drop out of your tranny. It will take care of itself.
