Do I need this?
I was wondering about putting on a 4 inch exhaust and a different air filter system. We rv fulltime and wondered if this would help with a little more power. We pull a 16000 lb 5th wheel.I understand that my piping to the muffler is three and a half inches and from the muffler back is four.Do I need a true 4inch system? If so where is a good place to get both these things?Would either of these void my warranty? Thanks in advance..Dave

The reason being is because of the poor filtration of the K & N. K & N flows good, but filters poorly as evidenced by the silicon reading of UOA's.
My only beef is this...people talk all sorts of smack about the filtration of K&N this and K&N that...AFE is better this, AEM is better that...AFE uses an 8 micron filter, AEM uses a 6 micron filter...K&N uses a 4 micron filter...I have posted about this before and I will post it again: Something that is EIGHT microns in size is in FACT LARGER than something that is FOUR microns...can everybody agree on that? So with that fact already knocked out of the way, it is also safe to say that a K&N filters BETTER than the other two...the silicon results from oil samples can't PROVE that a K&N filter is at fault, and can only PROVE that there are other factors involved: i.e. improper maintenance of the K&N, improper mounting of the K&N, using a K&N drop in filter rather than the entire K&N CAI (which may have different stats), etc, etc, etc...I have 7k on my K&N and ZERO issues, ZERO dust, dirt, debris, OIL, NOTHING in my tube or turbo...my father has ZERO issues with his either and has accumulated nearly 470k on his set up...

Derek, very good point. I ran K&N before I got this turbo set up and didn't have any issues with it either. But back to the original question posted, yes you would see a slight hp gain with an intake and exhaust but I think you should consider adding programming on top of that. The edge w/attitude could be an option but you can find plenty of imformation about all the different programs out there on this site.
I had a K&N, now I have a AFE, and I am very happy I did, it is actually noticable. Also I am not sure where you are getting your facts, but I was getting dirt in my k&n, but not with my afe. I know of other people up here with the same results. You only have to look at them to see the difference.
As for the exhaust, you will notice a difference, but be very careful which system you go with, I put the MBRP on mine, and while towing it tends to drone. From what I understand there is others out there that dont.
Also for towing if you put on a edge juice or a quad tow box, it will be the finishing touch on your truck for towing, it is amazing how much difference it is

I know that I have been hearing MANY people in here brag about the 8 micron, 7 layer filtration of the AFE Stage 2...so I hope this helps..."10. What is the micron rating and filtering efficiency of the K&N filter?
K&N air filter designs are tested both in house and by independent testing laboratories for air flow, filtering efficiency and dust retention. The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) establishes testing standards for automotive air filters. Independent testing of panel and round K&N air filters has confirmed an overall efficiency rating of over 99% when tested using the SAE J726 air filter test code. The test results provide scientific details including particle size, size distribution, testing methodology and results. The overall results establish the superiority of our filters against the “competition”. The OEM minimum specification is 96% with ISO (International Organization for Standardization) test dust which consists of a majority of 0 to 5 micron particles but some up to 20 microns in size. Test results showed that a paper filter has a 99.29% cumulative efficiency and a 96.47% initial pass. A K&N filter, with far less restriction than paper, has a 99.05% cumulative efficiency and a 97.11% initial pass."
So it was explained that K&N has a 97.11% pass efficiency rating of materials even from 5 down to ZERO microns...that alone is filtering good enough to hook me as a customer for life. I'm not trying to represent brands or bash others, I'm just going with numbers presented before me...that's all. I'm sorry that you had bad mojo with K&N and that you had dusting as a result, but until I do, I'll keep the $200 system over the $420 (bought my K&N AND filled my tank when I sold it)

03 does not a have a full 4 inch exhaust. In fact the elbow coming off the turbo is 3.5 inch.A 04.5 or 05 elbow is a full 4 inch.I changed to a Banks full 4 inch exhaust including elbow with about 3k on my truck and saw a instant 1 plus mpg gain.

As for warranty a with a CAI some dealers will give you a lot BS with it on and some will not. My self I'll wait until I have no warranty and then do what I want. The reason is I don't have one is that I don't always have the time or money to argue with Dodge or a dealer about after market parts being on my engine and did it or did it not casue the problem.

If you increase the size of the pipes, the exhaust gas velocity slows down for normal driving and the powerband moves up. A cat back exhaust may be a little help for towing but I would just stick with the stock air filter or maybe try the Amsoil nanofiber model as there seem to be good posts about them filtering good and allowing good flow.
He has an 03 in Florida. Not going to be a cat on there. On my 03 I had an AFE intake with pg7 and straight piped. Egt s were about 100 degrees cooler, but I didn't feel any more power until I added the Edge Ez or the Diablo
Predator. I think those exhaust and intake dealers tend to fib a little. They do the most good when you are making allot of Extra power.
