Dirty oil common rail

Just picked up an 06 for the wife and found the oil dirties up fast. How much oil sits in the common rail? Can a seal fail between the oil system and the fuel system? Haven't had time to find out how this thing ticks yet, but am about to order a manual. Any knowledgeable answers welcome.

3rd injection event. Mine is dirty the second it starts up. Nature of the beast, brother.

You can have the oil sent off and tested and it will most likely be fine. The 3rd injection event trucks (04.5 on up) turn the oil black immediately after an oil change. The oil is fine. It takes some getting used to when you are used to seeing the oil look honey colored in prior year trucks. But it's fine and normal to turn black on the 04.5 up trucks.

I have experienced the same thing on my '06 CTD AND my '06 Jetta Diesel. The higher injection pressures, and the 3rd inj event tend to create finer soot particles that get past the rings easier.

No oil in the common rail. A common rail refers to how they send fuel to the injectors. Old pumps had individual lines from the P-pump or VP44 to each injector. On a common rail, all of the injectors share a common supply of high pressure fuel from one fuel rail that is feed by the CP3. Hence, Common Rail.

Actually #2 is a type of fuel "oil."

If you want to get specific.

TexasCTD,
What exactly is the 3rd injection event? Is that like three "squirts" per combustion? Always wondered...

It is when the injector fires 3 times at different points of the 4 cycle stroke. Do some searching on here. Some folks can get specific.

My '92 Hino and my old '98.5 CTD blackened the oil pretty darn quick, but not ten miles like the '07. Just got my analysis back from Blackstone and once again they said perfect! My '98.5's oil would look pretty clean on the stick, but drain it and it was filthy black.

The "in cylinder" EGR gets you too. A cam will fix that though.

Yep, Spooler answered it here. I think the new 07.5 on up 6.7 Cummins trucks have 5 injection events but im not that familiar with them.

I haven't seen oil blacken that fast since the old Navistar 6.9s roamed the earth. Was curious if Cummins had gone Heui with this one. Not bad power stock, just a little suprised by the oil.

Black oil in a diesel is a good thing. That means the oil is doing it's job. Soot is suspended in the oil where it belongs, instead of clogging up things somewehere else it doesn't belong.

Like the other DTR Members, the oil in my 2006 turns black almost immediately too. What is funny is the oil in my 1996 with over 800 H.P. and HUGE injectors stays cleaner longer than the 2006.
