Differential change help
I was hoping someone could help me with what it takes to change out the front and rear end.
1.What kind of oil is recommend to use in 05 4x4, i know synthetic but deciding between weights
2. gasket is reusable yes?
3. How many Quarts for front and rear?
4. Whats the Tq specs on the bolts?
5. Do I need to do transfer case along with this? How many quarts of what?
Any final tips to make this process a breeze? I know it's a pretty simple thing but I am and never was good with tooling around on my truck. I need to start saving THOUSANDS of dollars by NOT going to the dealer for maintenance work

I'm running Amsoil 80W-140 in the back and 75W-90 up front. Buy 4 quarts for the back and 3 quarts for the front. Gaskets are re-usable. Torque the bolts to 30 ft lbs; but be careful - some folks around here have reported that they break easily under torque. I've never had any of them break but thought I'd pass on the warning. Fill plug torque is 24 ft lbs. You can either loosen all the bolts and merely drain the fluid out without removing the diff covers; or you can remove the covers and wipe the inside off and inspect the gear(s).
For the x-fer case, buy 3 quarts of syn ATF. The drain and fill plugs are in the back of the case. I changed my fluid out the first time I did the diffs.
I use a little pump rather than funnels to fill the diff's and x-fer case. A pretty simple evolution.

Thnaks for the reply, All sounds good. What kind of syn ATF do you use? Does the front and rear take all of 4 and 3 qts or a little less?

I'm running Amsoil ATF in the x-fer case; have changed it out twice now. For a change, next time I will put in Mobil1 ATF.
Concerning the 3 and 4 quarts of diff oil (it was something like 2.75 and 3.75 quarts) - you will have some oil left over; six quarts won't be enough.

75W140 as I tow heavy. I did use the DC recommended stuff when the truck was new and the gears went south. When they put the new gears in, I used the heavy stuff and no issues since. Redline.

I thought about just having some body else do it, but after i did my first fuel filter change, i loved being able to do simple maintenance. that way i know exactly how everything is done, how tight those bolts were put on, etc. you know what i mean? I like tooling around like that i just need to not worry about screwing somthing up.
I do tow quite a bit, but not ALL the time. I would say my heaviest load would be around 10k normally. Would you recommend the 75W140 for my use?

Just did mine and used Mobile 1 Synthetic 75W-90. A lot of people that pull are using 75W-140 but I don't believe that this has been approved by Dodge so you may run into a warranty issue (but they would have to prove it was the oil). Once my warranty is out I will switch to the 75W-140 as I have heard nothing but good by people using it. It takes 7.65 pints for the rear and 3.5 pints for the front or 7 quarts total. There is a service bulletin (can't remember the number) out for the fill level and states for my 2004 to fill it 1/4" below fill line (fill plug) plus or minus 1/4" for my rear 11.5 and front 9.25. I just filled it up shy of the fill hole. I have not yet done the transfer case.
I must say that I admire guys who change their own oil and diff fluids. I've done it for over 30 years on most of my vehicles but choose not to tackle my CTD. Main reason is that I tow a 5th wheel and do some 4X4 off road stuff so I want dealer records on recommended maintenance in case problems arise in the future. Plus, as you age you have less of a desire to crawl around under the "beast" like I would have in the past.

I actually have a database that we use for our company maintenance on my home computer and keep all my maintenace records on it. You never know if you need the records until something happens. I hope nothing does but I can prove with purchase orders, reciepts, and work orders that the work was done!!
This all sounds good fellas. Any websites out there where i can get some nice synthetic fluid maybe amsoil that i need for all my changes? i'll take a look at genos and see what they carry
