diff & trans temps

Hey all...can anyone tell me what the normal running temps on the rear diff. (410's) and the tranny (automatic) for 2004 3500 single axle(diesel) should be? And is there a zone for each that is considered safe when towing?? Thanks

I dont know about the Diffs, its never been mentioned to me as something to monitor.

As for the Tranny, at 250* you might as well have water in there. I see a normal around 180*. Heavy pulling on a medium grade (4-5%) might take me to 200*, but i dont dare let it come to 210*.

Stock tranny with stock cooling.

Thanks for the replies.. I have the aftermarket pans for each, so I will probably get a set of sending units & gauges to monitor both...TexasCTD, thanks for that graph its great...made a copy of it, so I can show it to my friends

The alarm cel is set for 280.

Sitting in traffic I can see 220, normal driving 150 to 180 and flat towing 170 to 210.

Diff temps...

In the front, the needle hardly comes above 100 degrees in the winter. In summer, especially on long interstate trips, it may rise to 160 - 180°.

The rear will warm up to 140° in the winter, and maybe around 200 in summer.

I've seen as high as 220 - 230° rear towing 10k on the interstate.

I have the MagHytek covers front and rear.

As with anything, lower temps extend life.
