Diff Fluids-Dealer Says...

This is new for me. I have a 06 mega 3500. !5000 miles. Time for fluid change. I call the dealer and ask how much. 65 dollars for semi synthetic and 75 dollars for full synthetic per axle. This is at Ed moses in Scottsdale. They said 75-90wt for the semi, but said 75-125wt for the full. I thought Dodge only used full synthetic in the diffs. I am inclined to use Mobil One and do it myself. Anyone heard of this before?

From: Where hell freezes over.
Full synthetic front and rear.
If you tow alot use 75-145 in rear.
If you don't alot use 75-90 front and rear.
3 quarts front, 4 quarts rear.
Approx. cost front and rear if do it yourself, under $70.00
Front and rear gaskets are reuseable.

My 06 2500, 11.5 Diff took 4.5 qt's. BTW, I pulled my cover to inspect the gears and I also wanted all of the old oil out of it. I replaced mine with Amsoil 75w90. Many use Mobil 1, but I wanted top of the line quality synthetic gear oil.

the AAM axles have their own fluid from the factory that we use, which i am inclined to tell you to use. it is the same front and rear, it is full synthetic.

What's all this business of changing fluids in diffs with such low miles. I've never even changed any of them in any vehicle I ever owned(not arguing that's good) but I guess I will on this 40 K truck, anyway, should I do it now @ 7500, or wait till 30k as manual says? I also want the best for this truck as I plan to drive it a very long time I hope.

changed mine @ 35k. it was pretty dang dark. so I may do sooner from now on, I think it all depends on how the truck is being used. I personally see no reason to change at 7500k, but again depends on the usage of the truck.

Manual says 15k......so I changed it at 15k.
Went with Amsoil Severe Gear. Wouldn't use it again.
I have some gear noise at 16k.
Didnt hear it before the Amsoil.

Tacook,

Do you have Limited Slip diffs? If you read the Amsoil 75-90 Severe Gear oil bottle it said it is compatible with most Limited Slip rear ends, but if you get chatter to use Slip Lock additive to your gear oil to stop the chatter.

Go buy a bottle of slip additive and add it to your gear oil and the chatter should go away. I just changed mine and I used Amsoil 75-90 Severe Gear oil and I have no problems with it in mine. If I get some chatter later on I will just add some additive to my gear oil.

BTW, This could happen with any gear oil not just the one you used!

nelrod,

I like to change it out at under 10,000 miles as I don't want all of the metal shaving in the oil for 30,000 miles. Also if their is a broken or cracked teeth on the gears I want to know ASAP. I have also heard of some not getting filled full with gear oil at the factory we all know what can happen to the Diff when it's low on gear oil

Mobil1 one for me, if it's good enough for the gear boxes I repaired on a million dollar jet engines , it's good enough for my truck. Besides that, my GM truck always used it , and it's at the 430k mark now.

Mobile 1 use to be a good oil when it first came out. Then they changed it to cheap hydro cracked dino oil. Once they did this I will not use it in any thing I own and I don't think it should be called Synthetic oil. It would not surprise me if they did the same with there gear oil so I will not use it either. My self I don't want just good enough, I want good quality top of the line oil.

The limited slip additive is for the older units (or for units with clutch packs) These new ones use a Torsion type limited slip. Don't need any modifiers unless you feel like spending some money.

If it is an 06 the manual says 75w90 Syn, and NO additive.

DBLR- so now Mobil one is now super refined dino? I thought Mobil was the one that sued Castrol? for calling their oil synthetic. Castrol won judge ruled had same properties ? and abilities as synthetic. I agree with you, if it is not fully synthetic it shouldn't be called that. For example I think Rotella synthetic oil is actually just super refined dino oil.
